COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Drawn from one of our oldest recipes, Smitten Ale began as part of a series of rye beers at our Eccentric Café. The combination of sharp citrus & resinous flavors from the hops with the earthy, rustic overtones of the rye malt contribution yield an interesting take on the American Pale Ale.

ARH (406) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 25, 2014
UPDATED: MAR 27, 2014 On tap, poured into a stemmed pilsner glass. The initial aroma is a toasted rye, which fades with the head. The aroma is replaced by a lemon citrus note, followed by resin, and finally, as it settles, reaches a tropical fruit aroma. The beer pours a heavily hazy pale (some orange notes) with a generous, whitish, beat-egg whipped head. This head leaves a spider web-like ample head with really good, micro bubble retention. The head left behind is thick enough where the body isn’t visible from the top of the beer. A nice balance is struck between a juicy, medium sweetness, and a dry, medium bitter. The medium body is a bit on the watery / thin side, but there is some creaminess due to the abundant fluffy carbonation. It’s a dry, crisp, clean beer. The front of this one starts with caramel malt, but turns to a grassy, floral, resin-like finish. As it warms a tropical fruit, rye bread, and light citrus flavor comes through. The beer finishes with a light, mellow rye bread and tropical fruit combination that leaves behind a similar aftertaste that kicks off strong, but tapers quickly.

Pours a clear amber with a thick and fairly persistent buff head. Strong aroma has a firm rye component and a note of fresh hay. Sharp rye flavor has a fruity undertone, crisp and enjoyable if simple. Texture has average thickness and fizz. An enjoyable ale.

On tap at The Chicago Beer Festival 2014. Pour hazy amber with a small white head. Aroma and flavor of citrus hops, light rye, and grass/hay. Plain but refreshing.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy golden copper with bright white head. Nice lacing. Aroma is a blend of citrus, spice and slight floral notes. Taste is a very slight sweet citrus, balanced by that rye note. This is a very tasty, different APA, a good intro for those afraid of "darker" beers.

Not a bad beer. I was excited to try it and it was kind of average to me. Nice citrus aroma with a really average taste. I was surprised with how basic it tasted, I was expecting a lot more.

On tap it is an orange amber with a medium head. Taste is a blend of spice and malt with a light hop on the back. Does all that without seeming too complex and finishes clean and crisp. Pretty good stuff.

[Bottle (12oz)] Pours a cloudy gold with a small diminishing fizzy white head. Mild aroma of grain, light rye malt, some citrus and light hops. Flavour, also mild, of light rye malt, some fruit and light hops. Average bitter finish. Average bodied. A simple, mild, easy to drink Golden ale, but not something I’d get again, too mild for me.

Nice cloudy, golden color with a long lasting head. Tasted earthy, with hay and floral, grassy, and light citrus hops. A nice mix. Definitely a beer I would drink again.

Pretty good for a golden ale, though not too golden. More amber from rye. Some citrus, big rye profile and light to medium bitter finish. On tap at Capital Lounge
