3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Reviewed 2/25/13. Thanks to Momar42 for the 12 oz bottle! Poured into a nonic pint glass.
A: Pours a golden orange color with a ton of yeast particles floating around. The head is a two finger white shade. Both texturing and retention are pretty damn good, and the lacing left by the receding head is quite attractive as well. Pretty face, ugly body, let’s split the difference here.
S: I do notice a bit of rye to it, along side some piny, herbal hops. The hop profile seems to fit the rye malt quite well. It becomes a bit maltier as it warms up, and grows a biscuity component as well. Aromatically, it could be a little less muted.
T: One thing that lets me down right from the onset is the lack of distinctive character to it. It starts and finishes with a combination of earthy, spicy malts and piny hops. After a while, the finish will develop a grassy hop quality to it that I enjoy somewhat. This really is the type of beer more conducive to simple drinking than actual reviewing...
M: Rougher than I like, which is exasperated by the coarse yet strong carbonation and fuller body. The back end is quite clean and crisp; so maybe this would be good in the summer time?
O: Not bad - but I’m certainly not smitten with it. It’s too sharp in feel for its nondescript flavor profile.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pint can from VE. Nose grainy rye, as in lightly-toasted rye berries, pour clear and very rich golden with orange undertones, medium carbonation, but a large and sudsy beige head. Very subtle lace and lighter legs. Taste is strongly bitter with medium astringency, quite dry with a high degree of resin, spice; a very crisp medium-full body with heavy alcohol presence and light heat, light spice scratch, and only minimal relief from bright citrus. Rye is the dominant flavor, which is quite a compliment in the brewing world, where it’s usually only a suggestion spurred by verbal associations; still, malt is a little flat and the alcohol/spice suppress any kind of significant depth. Do like the consistent and lingering earthy-bready character, and the hops here are well-chosen to complement the toast. Lightly sticky lips, some faint hidden sunshine from rye-pils (?) and a nice traditional Pre-Prohibition/whiskey character, supported by a perfumed floral base. Bitterness never quite gets to rubbery but isn’t ideal; otherwise clean as a whistle. This seems to be a spring seasonal but it makes for a tremendous autumn beer in my mind, pleasantly grainy and darkly tinted with suggestions of crunching leaf mold underfoot and bracing warmth against the chilling wind. An adult beverage for sure. [2016.08.29: 3.7]

12 ounce bottle from Badger Spirits in Beloit, WI (July 2016), sampled from a pint glass fairly cold. Big pop of the cap, and it pours a glassful of foam, which subsides fairly quickly atop a light, clear gold-amber body....plenty of rye spiciness along with more typical pale malt structure in the aroma, moderate piney hop presence and a touch of honey sweetness....fairly soft, rounded mouthfeel, with more sweetness than usual, bitterness coming in only late; honey and sweet malts dominate throughout, carbonation is on the low side...not badly made, exactly, but not really what I want in an APA, too thick and sticky for this kind of drinking experience IMO.

Lightly hazed golden liquid. Modest off-white head. Grain, rye and light floral scents. Smooth feel. Flavors are rather simple, with some spicy rye, floral hops, little citrus and earth. Dry finish with a spicy linger. 2/13

355ml bottle into schooner glass. Surprisingly sweet and grainy nose for an APA. Cloudy golden sunset colour with fulsome white head and steady fine carbonation. Medium body, zingy on the tongue. Finish is bitter, dry and grainy. Pleasant enough, hop forward but a bit subdued. Perhaps a little past its best.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
bottle from January 15, 2016 purchased from Bruisin’. Pours a slightly hazy light amber color with a good white head. The aroma is very pleasantly spicy and still has a little hop punch to it. Notes of lemon, rye, grapefruit, and pepper come through. The palate is medium with just the right amount of sweetness for balance. Carbonation is spot on. The rye is up front in the flavor giving this a welcome spiciness. Hops add a tasteful level of citrus and bitterness in the back of the palate. Everything is balanced and super clean. I love the prominence of the rye on this one. I’d say this is one of the best pale ales I’ve had in a little while.
