COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Drawn from one of our oldest recipes, Smitten Ale began as part of a series of rye beers at our Eccentric Cafť. The combination of sharp citrus & resinous flavors from the hops with the earthy, rustic overtones of the rye malt contribution yield an interesting take on the American Pale Ale.

It starts, as it usually doesnít, with something special. What the hell are these little pollen dusts doing in my glass, and why are they turning me on? Am I drinking beer today or chicken stock from a Michelin starred kitchen?

These Rye Beers have put me on full tilt. Like Emmy Rossum, I canít stop thinking about them.

So I let this brew with the IPA nose sit for a few weeks before granting myself the privilege of tasting it. The moment had to be right, as it is now. A near Spring day, momma bear and little b napping, and little olí me with nothing to do except relax with a pint that smells like cantaloupe, coriander and pine.

Itís not my favorite in this style, no. But it is a decent effort, highlighted by a refreshing weight. Itís rare to find a cool-your-mouth brew with enough body that you have to be reminded to swallow. Maybe Iím overreacting to last night. Or maybe not. I think it really does have that balance.

When the lips meet the glass thereís also rye bread (more obviously than with others in this style), bitter honey, dried leaves and mostly there roundness thatís sullied only by the absence of a citrus, ideally tangerine, note.

Bottles over the last few years. Yellow color, white head, smell is pretty hoppy; some rye noted. Taste is similar, pleasantly bitter, easy to drink... Tastes good on the warming spring days. I usually get several 12 packs of this through the course of the spring.

On tap at The Ginger Man, NYC. An almost clear one, golden in color and with a dense, finger-thick off-white head. The aroma is malty and fruity, with pine cones, grapefruit and a meaty touch. Sort of meaty, burger-ish in a way. Thereís a nice bitterness in the flavor, on a malty back, less meaty than the aroma though. Caramel, pine cones and some grapefruits. Itís full-bodied, nicely carbonated and quite dry on the palate, the finish of the lasting kind. A bit too malty for me this one, but itís a fine beer anyway. 150624

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle dated 01/13/15. Hazy pale yellow, heady pour. An old bottle picked up at a New York convenience store that has probably lost some of its character. Some toasted sweet maltiness in the taste, rye grain, and grassy hops. Light to medium body. The grainy malts are more forward in the taste and there is a strong peppery bitterness at the end. I think the hops have faded in 6 months.

Pale golden pour with a thick white head. The nose is a bit bright and fruity. Some light berry esters and a bit of spicy/citrusy hoppiness. Very fresh and well balanced. I donít get much rye character at all, but itís a tasty pale ale. Clean and crisp.

Pours clear gold with a finger of white head. Aroma is orange and grapefruit citrus. Very smooth with sweet citrus notes yielding to a nice rubbery bitter bite. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
