COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Drawn from one of our oldest recipes, Smitten Ale began as part of a series of rye beers at our Eccentric Café. The combination of sharp citrus & resinous flavors from the hops with the earthy, rustic overtones of the rye malt contribution yield an interesting take on the American Pale Ale.

It starts, as it usually doesn’t, with something special. What the hell are these little pollen dusts doing in my glass, and why are they turning me on? Am I drinking beer today or chicken stock from a Michelin starred kitchen?

These Rye Beers have put me on full tilt. Like Emmy Rossum, I can’t stop thinking about them.

So I let this brew with the IPA nose sit for a few weeks before granting myself the privilege of tasting it. The moment had to be right, as it is now. A near Spring day, momma bear and little b napping, and little ol’ me with nothing to do except relax with a pint that smells like cantaloupe, coriander and pine.

It’s not my favorite in this style, no. But it is a decent effort, highlighted by a refreshing weight. It’s rare to find a cool-your-mouth brew with enough body that you have to be reminded to swallow. Maybe I’m overreacting to last night. Or maybe not. I think it really does have that balance.

When the lips meet the glass there’s also rye bread (more obviously than with others in this style), bitter honey, dried leaves and mostly there roundness that’s sullied only by the absence of a citrus, ideally tangerine, note.

Great aroma of rye and fruit. Light amber colour, not much of a head. A metallic slightly bitter taste. With a weak bitter palate.

Fresh bottle. Pours bright yellow gold with tall white head. Aroma is grassy, hay, slightly floral, some citrus. Taste is a nice resin burst against the distinctive rye malt. The malt takes over here and gives an earthy taste. Not bad at all.

12 oz. Hazy orange with a loose, sticky foam. Mild nose of lemon candy, toast and an occasional trace of green onion. Tastes of earthy spicy toast, mild soap suds and lemon honey. Finish has some minty green herb. Light body has medium-high carbonation and a long dry finish.

At Tap House Des Plaines. More summery and grassy than I expected for a Rye ale which is usually so winter warmery spicey. Nice. Serving: Tap

Bottled 1/27/14. Pour has a medium golden color with some light sediment floating around and a thin cap of white head that fell off. Aroma has rye, nice hops, and pale malt. Mouth feel is medium light with medium low carbonation. Flavor has a bitter rye upfront, flowery hops, lemon zest, and enough supporting malt to hold it together.

12oz bottle from The Beer Store Wilson. Golden hue, murky clarity with tons of small body particles, mostly lasting frothy white head. Excellent lacing. Rye, citrus, grain, floral aromas. Light citrus hop & rye up front with a light hop finish. My least favorite Bells brew so far.

4/9/14. Draft at the Field House, Philly. Pours hazy orange with a thin head. Mild nose. Hops hit right away as advertised with citrus and pine notes. Thinner mouth than I expected for a rye. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A golden ale with a thin lacing white head. In aroma, light biscuit malt with light honey and floral hops. In mouth, a nice grassy biscuit malt with Czech like floral hops, grapefruit, smooth and quaffable. On tap at Corner Foodery.
