Drawn from one of our oldest recipes, Smitten Ale began as part of a series of rye beers at our Eccentric Café. The combination of sharp citrus & resinous flavors from the hops with the earthy, rustic overtones of the rye malt contribution yield an interesting take on the American Pale Ale.

On tap at The Ginger Man, NYC. An almost clear one, golden in color and with a dense, finger-thick off-white head. The aroma is malty and fruity, with pine cones, grapefruit and a meaty touch. Sort of meaty, burger-ish in a way. There’s a nice bitterness in the flavor, on a malty back, less meaty than the aroma though. Caramel, pine cones and some grapefruits. It’s full-bodied, nicely carbonated and quite dry on the palate, the finish of the lasting kind. A bit too malty for me this one, but it’s a fine beer anyway. 150624

Bottle from Bine & Vine. Pours gold with a white head. Aroma of rye and citrus. Med + body. Flavor is very rye, with citrus and something earthy/floral. Malt. For a second I thought "strawberry jam". It’s towards dry, and it’s pretty darn bitter. Nice rye finish mixed in with the hop.

Draft at Eccentric Cafe. Poured clear copper color with an average frothy white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate citrus, rye and wheat aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. The beer is a good drinkable brew.
