COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Drawn from one of our oldest recipes, Smitten Ale began as part of a series of rye beers at our Eccentric Caf. The combination of sharp citrus & resinous flavors from the hops with the earthy, rustic overtones of the rye malt contribution yield an interesting take on the American Pale Ale.

Hazy orange-gold pour with a 2 finger, super creamy off white head that has great retention and leaves decent lacing. Aroma of citrus, cereal, earthy grain, pine and floury grain. Flavor is all toast and biscuit up fron, then some pine, earthy, spicy grain, tart citrus, fruity esters, an odd sweet grain that tastes oddly like sorghum, light nutty notes and bready yeast. Medium body, creamy to chalky feel and light, but blanketing and rather sharp carbonation. Pretty tasty, though pretty strange, lots of odd malt stuff going on here.

Draft at Ground Control. Yes, its golden (with a hazy tilt). Yes, it carries a rye character (gritty, earthy). Its without technical flaw. In the end, I found this a pleasant but not different summer sipper. (#6117, 2/12/2016)

Clear and golden in color with a thick white head. Thick, sticky lacing. Spicy rye, grassy, with lemons. Heavy bitterness. Good beer but hard to drink a lot of it.

Love the nose on this beer. You can almost smell that rye spiciness. Malt flavors meld well with the rye, and the hops synergize well. Bit too bitter, but very enjoyable none the less.

Nice and dry. Good spicy notes and little grassiness. Too thin but drinks easily. Good with food.

Honeydew melon and cracker aromas. Taste is cantaloupe and honeydew melons, then pepper rye crackers; finally an astringent finish.

On tap at Fieldhouse. Strong rye taste and aroma. Golden color as one would guess.

Poured from a bottle. Pours a slightly cloudy golden amber with a thin white ring. Pine resin and sweet citrus aroma. Light syrupy body with medium bitterness. Mostly citrus rind with a somewhat bitter and dry finish. OK but not great.

Pours hazy golden orange with a one finger soapy white head with nice lacing. Aroma is of citrus, pine resin, spicy rye, bready malts, grassy hops, and some light sweet malts. Taste is pretty similar to the aroma. Has a medium body with a creamy mouthfeel and a semi dry, semi-moderately bitter, medium-long finish. Overall, a pretty tasty, easy drinking rye pale ale.

Pours a slightly cloudy, pale golden orange color with a half finger frothy white head that quickly settles into a lasting ring. Sporadic streaks of soapy lacing left behind. Spicy, faint floral hop aroma with some earthy resin and sweet citrus countered by pale malt and bready yeast. Somewhat bland really with not much of a rye presence. Just some spicy, grassy hops followed by bread, biscuit and subtle light fruit notes. Full bodied and much more interesting than expected. The nose is pretty boring but its actually complex, well balanced and flavorful. Crisp spicy hop bite up front gives off some dry bitterness with resinous oils, grass and pine needle flavor. Some peppery rye, but like the nose, its not a dominant flavor. Nicely balanced by yeast, light fruit notes and a pale malt backbone. Hints of bread, biscuit and cracker round things out in the dry finish. Not a great beer but its refreshing and easy to drink with nice hop flavor.

Bottle from Beer Cartel 181015. Possibly the best rye beer that I have. Full bodied with a thick mouthfeel and long aftertaste. Deep golden colour with a deep pillow of foam.
