Aroma is light smoky, not much else . Appearance is dark red/brown, light light brown head. Taste is smoky, bitter, roasted malt. Mouthfeel is not think but not light and it hangs around. Overall, good in the sense of a smoked beer, mediocre as a stout.

Had on-tap at Bell’s Eccentric Cafe. Appearance: Pitch black with barely any head in the sample glass. Patchy lacing. Y’know, your typical stout. Shit, I need to get more inventive with my reviews. Slacker... Smell: Picture any quality stout you’ve ever had, and add a smoke note -- that’s this beer. The chocolate is a bit in the background to the heavy roasted malt/coffee sort of aromas, and the smoke. This is my first "smokey" beer, and I think this smells great. Taste: Wow. It just tastes... excellent. A lot like the smell, but what I’m most impressed with (and I guess it’s probably typical...) is that while it has the smoke aroma and flavor, it doesn’t taste ashy at all. There’s just a solid medium feel with this beer that gets it to coat your mouth and throat just enough. Massive coffee and roast with a moderate amount of smoke and bitterness... this is some good stuff. Bold flavor, but brewed just right to keep it from being overwhelming.

On tap at Bells Eccentric Cafe in Kalamazoo. Pours pitch black with a tan head and smokey, coffee aroma. Taste is of smokey wood, bitter chocolate and coffee with roasted malt and a burnt, smokey finish. Nice stout from Bells

On tap at Bells Brewery, Kalamazoo , Michigan, pours a dark black poor with a java colored head. Nose is deep smoke, coffee , chocolate and malt. Taste is sweet and smokey full of coffee and chocolate, and all flavor. Finish is bittersweet and the smoke lingers. Great . Quaff score 8 /10

Black with a light brown head. An aroma of light smoke/peat and a gentle touch of roasted malts. It has a creamy mouthfeel with a very gentle presentation of roasted malts and smoke. This is balanced very well. There’s just enough smoke to make it compelling. There seems to be a slight anise flavor in addition to its attractive malt bill. It’s damn good, and different. Out of the norm and fantastic, smooth, mellow, easy, and not too smoky. This is a good choice for those who aren’t big fans of heavy smoke.

On tap at Eccentric....definitely smoky, but not too smoky. Like the flavor a lot. Great with a sweet desert.

Aroma is coffee, roast malts, pleasant smokiness, maybe a hint of cocoa. Pours black, not opaque, little if any haze, off-white head. Flavor is a nice balance of roast, chocolate, and smoke. The smoke is definitely in the foreground, but is not overwhelming, which is the first sign of success with a smoked beer. Some spiciness from the smoke and hops, minimal sweetness. Body is a touch thin, medium carbonation. Nice brew - a step beyond your average smoked beer, in my opinion.

S: Yowza, like sniffing a a sausage! Very heavy smoke, which works better with a stout than a lager. The roasted coffee beans and chocolate come through pretty clearly A: Nice looking stout - light brown head T: Very smoke heavy, that sausage smell becomes a reality. The malts mix well P: Feels good, not very full O: Lives up to the name. I couldn’t have much of this, or any other smoked for that matter, but went well with the roast beef sandwich

Half pint at the brewery. This beer is black as midnight. Roasty, charred aroma. Not particularly meaty but maybe like burned bacon. Espresso, earth, dark cacao scents as well. Creamy palate. Delicious balance of cacao, espresso, lingering, hidden notes of smoke. A faint bittersweetness balances things out. Absolutely tasty, but needs more smoke
