Draft. Poured clear dark brown color with an average frothy brown head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate smoke sweet malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium complex sweet smoke flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. My expectation where met.

Tap @ Bells. Black appearance with a tan head. Moderate smoky, rich dark chocolate malty, light espresso aroma. Delicious full bodied, moderately smoky, dark chocolate, light coffee, light vanilla flavor. Great beer.

Sample at the Bell’s tasting at Brews Cafe on 3/6/08: The beer pours a dark brown color with a thin beige head that dissipates steadily. Spotty lacing on the glass. Moderately smoky aroma with notes of roasted grain and dark chocolate. Medium-bodied with a smoke character that never threatens to get into meat/charcoal territory. Notes of milk chocolate, coffee and mild hops flavors. The finish is fry and moderatley bitter with hops and smoke in the aftertaste. Seems more like a Smoked Porter along the lines of Alaskan. Still a decent beer.

On tap at Maduro, pre-GTMW ’08: Pours a nearly opaque black with dark mahogany edges and a thin-lacing wispy tan head. Aroma of lightly sweet dark carramel malts and some mild, earthy smoke. Body is a little thinner than I expected, but quite drinkable with some dark chocolate and roasty smoked notes before a semi-dry finish. Decent smoked stout, but could use a little more body and smoke character.

On tap at Maduro. Poured lighter black with a short-lived cap of deep tan head. The aroma was dry and chocolatey with well-integrated smoked malts.. somewhat restrained but nice. The flavor had dry-roasted chocolate and coffee at the core with toasty smoked malts extending outward.. dry finish picked up an unexpected dose of sourness (not necessarily bad). Dry and toasty on the palate with nice smoky integration.. tasty.

Sampled from the tap at the brewpub. Pours black with dark brown head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has a nice combo of dark grain and smoke with backing roasted malts. Flavor has a nice balance of smoke and roasted malts with a bit of chocolate.

Tap at Eccentric Cafe: Deep brown hue with a creamy tan head and spotty lace. The aroma has notes of moderate meaty smoke, coffee, chocolate, walnut, herbal hops, and wet grains. The taste has a nice malty character balanced by some acidity and hop bitterness. Herbal and earthy in midsection before the very slight smoky finish. The mouth feel is lively and refreshing with a dry ashy finish. Not an overpowering smoked beer at all (perhaps too light handed for me) and it should be listed as stout. As a stout it is okay and worth a try.

Sampler pour on tap at the brewpub (Kalamazoo, MI). Pours a rich near opaque dark brownish pour, with a decent offwhite near tan head that rings small, laces small. Aromas are gentle smoke, cherrywood and chocolate, gentle kisses of campfire meats, some roast and toast. Initial is medium bodied, a touch girthy with a gentle smokiness up front, lots of cocoa, some fudge and coffee. Gentle roast, toast, caramel as we get into a more earthy smoked element, faint campfire. Not strong enough for me, personally. Offering some vanilla, a fairly creamy body, gentle smoke is earthy, no meatiness, with some gentle cherry or dark fruit elements. Finish is creamy, roasty, yet firm with inviting sweetness coming into play. Interesting, not as smoky as I’d prefer, but solid. The smoke grows as it gets warmer, but still keeps that cherrywood sweeter element to it. Ok, but I’d prefer a stronger meaty smoke.. As a smokehead.
