Sweeter and smoother than Kalamazoo Stout. A beer for special winter occasions. Great with chocolate desserts. Available October-March.

Bottle picked up in Charlottesville, VA. Pours dark black with a nice big beige head. super creamy, but super flavorful too, especially as it warms. Great combination of complexity and quaffability. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: APR 15, 2007 (bottle) Pours like motor oil with a brown head. Aroma of roasted malt and hints of mocha. Lots of carbonation, clashing with malts, strong cofee presence; unpleasant chalking taste. Slight bitter after taste thats relatively clean. Overated! Try their porter. ________________________________ I take back what I said! Turns out that the reason it tasted chalky is because I drank it out of mulike stein. Much better in an eglish pint. Very good sout. How could I actually consider that this brewery could make a bad stout! My apologies. My original review was a 2.9 overall.

Pours black in color with a small tan head. Aroma or roasted coffee and chocolate. Intial malty chocolate flavor and finishes with a burn coffee taste. Pretty tasty beer.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark black/brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is typical stout-smell... chocolate and coffee with neither overwhelming the other. Incredibly smooth mouthfeel and flavor, chocolate, coffee, vegetable soup (Bells stouts tend to remind me of vegetable soup for some reason...?) Well balanced, full-bodied. This is a good beer, but there’s really nothing especially unique about it. If I had to teach someone what a stout tastes like, I would choose this to sample first.

One of my favorites. Almost black with a tiny tan head. Light aroma of chocolate and caramel. Tastes of chocolate and roasted nuts. Very little alcohol taste despite being 7.5%. Its not as creamy as I epected but still very excellent. Washes hot wing sauce away like nothing else.

Bottle. Batch 7684 (packaged on 10-16-06) I cellered this one for about 6 monthes. Pours Black with a average frothy light brown head. The lacing is very good, it leaves a film from the top of the glass to the bottom, with a head that stays around for the whole beer. When looking at the bottom of the bottle once it is poured, this one is bottle conditioned, but looking through the glass I couldnt tell because it pours so black. The aroma in the hops isn’t much, but the malt aroma is awsome!!! There is a really nice roasted coffee aroma along with a slight hint of chocolate. There is also a hint of brown sugar. With the first taste it is very sweet with light bitterness. Then the finish is also quite sweet with a little bitterness to back it up. The duration of the finish is pretty long, (the bitterness is that of a medium roast coffee.) The body is extreamly full with a silky smooth creamy texture and very soft carbonation. Overall this is a awsome beer. I will have to taste it fresh to see if there is a differance, I also have one bottle left of this batch that I will keep in the celler for a while longer.

UPDATED: FEB 19, 2004 Aroma is primarily the burnt, roasted malts. Flavor is smokey and coffee. There appears to be some fruity notes underneath the smoke, but its hard to tell. Some dry hops up front and a fairly bitter finish.

Tried this courtesy of Tim at a tasting at his house in Dallas. Aroma is of coffee, raisins and dark cocoa. Deep brown in color with a light tan head and delicate lacing. Tastes of raisin with a touch of cocoa. A little more bitter than expected with lots of carbonation.
