Sweeter and smoother than Kalamazoo Stout. A beer for special winter occasions. Great with chocolate desserts. Available October-March.

12 oz. bottle from The Party Source. All right, out of the gate, I just have to say that for such a nice beer, people arenít putting any effort into the ratings. This beauty pours a really dark brown, almost black, with a small tan head that leaves some really cool lacing behind. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, earthy hops, dark fruits, coffee, a little smoke, vanilla, and molasses. Flavor of chocolate, fudge, vanilla, earthy hops, berries, grass, sweet roasted malts, metal, and cola. Medium bodied, with moderate carbonation and a mouthfeel thatís hard to characterize- maybe sweet roasted cherry juice. That doesnít make any sense. Anyway, this is a really nice sweet stout, and Iím starting to wonder if I mix this and Expedition Stout if I will get the highly sought-after beer with such high ratings. Maybe. Expedition Stout is better by itself. Iím going to see what equal parts will do...

On draft at the new growler joint in Savannah. It pours darkest brown with a small tan head. The nose is light roast, toast, rich chocolate, caramel, sugary coffee and cake. The taste is smooth, mellow roast, earth, chocolate, caramel, cocoa powder, lactose and coffee with a bitter-sweet finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Not a whole lot if depth, but very tasty and drinkable.

Bottle pours coffee black with a frothy tannish head. † Lacing appears to be uber sticky. † Sour cherries, semi-sweet chocolate, and cheesecake of all things greet the nose. † Up front I get a large burnt malt flavor that quickly turns bitter towards the finish. † Mouthfeel seems a tad thin, but not bad. † Midway through an appearance by some bittersweet chocolate and sour cherries show up. † Lingering burnt malt after the finish. † Tastes like the blending of creamy cheesecake with sour cheeries and coffee. † Quite enjoyable. † Thanks goes out to TChrome for the trade!

Bottle (batch 7801). Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is black (non-opaque). Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate, chocolate milk, caramel, nuts), with notes of vanilla, hint of smoke. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. A liquid candy bar. That pretty much sums this up...chocolate and vanilla galore. Not quite as decadent as one might expect from the name, but if you want that youíd already be opening an Expedition instead. Best sweet stout ever? Not sure Iíd go that far, but itís great.

Rastacouere (6119) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - MAR 18, 2004
Deep dark brown with small tan head. Rich malty aroma, almost vinous as it warms, definitely a touch of grapes in there. Bold chocolate and luscious cream. It smells thick. Full and generous sensuous mouthfeel with a gentle carbonation, as creamy as it gets, rich in flavours, very malty without much hop profile to balance, but not overly sweet. Rather short finish with a very mild trace of roast and bitterness, almost bland with not much going on. I like this more than I expected and I think it's the first stout my mom enjoys. Perhaps a little too rich/creamy toward the end from my point of view. Sounds like a fitting name for such a smooth beer.

Bottle. Black colour with a fast dissapering big baige head. Roasted, liquorice, coffee aroma and a sweet roasted, chocolate, coffee taste. Medium to full body and a sweet velvet finish.

12-oz., courtesy the kind hospitality of BitBucket. Pours deep black with a thin off-white head. Tiny bit of sour funk on the nose. Almost wild yeast-like. Hollow body--roasty, but the emptiness makes the flavors too subdued. The attack and the finish just wither there. Not much happening. Really a disappointment.

Bottle (12oz). Shared with blankboy and tupalev - blankboyís bottle. Poured thick oily-looking black with a small light brown head. Dry and somewhat muted smoky aroma, opens out on warming; roast nuts and bitter coffee grounds, hot chocolate sweetness, some dry leafy hops with a hint of lactose and tart fruit - again, very dry. Taste was dry, bitter cocoa, some sour cherry mixed with creamy hot chocolate (with marshmallows) providing some sweetness, but it finished more than a little bitter. Dry, thick, chalky mouthfeel, almost syrupy, not much carbonation but why would you want that? This is another solid stout from these guys - Iím so jealous - dry aroma, sweet chocolate flavour and a thick, bitter roasty finish - a great stout.
