Sweeter and smoother than Kalamazoo Stout. A beer for special winter occasions. Great with chocolate desserts. Available October-March.

Pours black with a quick brown head with decent lacing. Nose is coffee with a little dairy sweetness and generic malt. Flavor is similar and well balanced, not too different from a good cup of coffee with cream and sugar. Finish is bittersweet and long. Not quite as sweet as I expect from a cream stout but still very good.

Bottle poured a clear dark brown with a lingering brown head. Aromas of dark chocolate, roastiness, coffee anbd a hint of vanilla. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of dark chocolate, roastiness, vanilla and light coffee with a smooth lingering roasty finish.

Whole Foods, DC six-pack ($11): Pours a nearly black color with the brown head. Aroma of creamed coffee, coffee creamer, cream and coffee, and a mocha latte. Double Cream is actually a little on the bitter side for a sweet stout, although there is still a sweetness. Also a little bit more watery than one would have expected, though creamy none the less. However, the bitter chocolate elements coupled with the superbly prepared malts make it all worthwhile.

Dark brown/black color with mocha brown head. Aroma is lighter than I expected from a double cream stout. There is some toffee, milk chocolate, and roasted malt in the aroma, but they’re more hints than reliable signposts of flavors to come. On the tongue the beer is more bold with its flavors, but they’re more subdued than they are balanced. Balanced boldness is what I wanted, but I was disappointed. The sensation of this beer on the palate are definitely pleasant and uniquely creamy, but instead of being a "wow" sensation it was more of a simple sensation of comfort. Definitely nice on a cold day.

I poured a 12 oz bottle, aged approximately one year (batch #9446), into a snifter. This poured inky black with a thin khaki head that quickly dissipated and left little lacing. As expected, the age on this added some complexity to the beer. Its aroma of prunes and roast malt now mingled subtly with flavors of stone fruit, espresso, and Belgian-ness. Some of these flavors certainly are surprises for a stout, but I attribute that to the aging, and I hastened to add that they did not in any way diminish the beer. This is a decadent treat at any age.

12oz bottle, pours a deep dark black, great tan lacing, nice sweet aroma, almost caramel. Interesting sweet taste, a bit of sweetness on the front and bitter on the back end. A cream sweetness becomes more prominent as the beer warms. Nice.

Aroma very sweet chocolate, cocoa, slightly roasty, hints of vanilla, a touch of caramel and slight nuttiness. Pour deep brown no visible light creamy beige head, minimal retention and lacing. Taste chocolaty, cocoa, slight hop bitterness, roasty malt, vanilla, nuttiness, heavy cream. MF full body very little carb. Overall an ok stout not my cup of beer.

Tasted on 8/2/11 from a 12oz bottle purchased at Lush Roscoe, batch 9357. Pours absolutely jet black with a thick tan head that slowly recedes to rocky lace, leaving a thick layer of lace residue along the inside of the glass. The nose is dark and malty with brown sugar, raisin, and prune sweetness, dark chocolate, mocha, and just a hint of roasted bitterness. The flavor is lightly sweet with some vanilla and brown sugar up front, moving to the fruity prune, raisin, and milk chocolate notes, and finishing with just a hint of roasted coffee bitterness, and even more vanilla. The body is full and creamy with average, mouth-filling smooth carbonation, and a long milk chocolate and vanilla finish.

Dark brown. Roasted malt, coffee, dark fruit. Coffee, blackened malt, mild fruit esters, light brown sugar, and a hint of lactose. Roast residual with mild hops.
