3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAR 3, 2003 Poured like oil, smelled weak. Taste like Starbucks chocolate frappachino with alcohol. Goes great with t-bone steak.

On tap at the brewery. Poured deep brown with a little head. Chocolate-malt aroma. Taste was yoo-hoo thick with a medicinal taste. The label on a bottle and the thick taste take me back to the 1800's and make me think that this beer could cure the common cold or at least the sniffles.

UPDATED: FEB 19, 2004 Aroma is primarily the burnt, roasted malts. Flavor is smokey and coffee. There appears to be some fruity notes underneath the smoke, but its hard to tell. Some dry hops up front and a fairly bitter finish.

Tried this courtesy of Tim at a tasting at his house in Dallas. Aroma is of coffee, raisins and dark cocoa. Deep brown in color with a light tan head and delicate lacing. Tastes of raisin with a touch of cocoa. A little more bitter than expected with lots of carbonation.

I remember trying this one before and couldnít figure why this brew had such high reviews. I decided to give it another try, with the same results. There is a lot of complexity to this beer but the finish completely threw me off. A sour metallic taste is about the best way I can put it. A different finish would have sent this one into the 4+ rating for sure.

Pours pitch black with a nice thick dark tan head. Nose was a bit funky but you did get some chocolate and vanilla notes. Taste almost reached the point of "just ok." There is some chocolate in the taste but this stout was not the least bit sweet. My hope that this was a funky batch but I am left with not much desire to try another.

Black pour with a foamy khaki head. Rather odd milky aroma ... not much else but I think the beer was still a bit too cold. Flavor of coffee, toffee and molasses with a tingly bitter finish. Thick mouthfeel with a tingly carbonation underneath. Quite nice ... but the weird milk-like aroma was a tad off putting.
