Our take on the West Coast-style Double India Pale Ale, The Oracle places hop intensity first & foremost, making only the slightest concession to malt & balance. The fireworks start with the floral aromatic punch of two separate dry-hop sessions with Amarillo and NZ Pacific Jade. Resinous, citrusy hop flavors mixed with aggressive bitterness from a massive kettle addition deliver on that aromatic promise.

The Oracle from Bells Brewery has been gracing my cooler long enough. @jimfooch was kind enough to see my comment about loving the idea of this beer on one of his posts, and then graced a trade with a bottle of this mysterious lady. - I pull back the cap and pour the beer, the liquid is hazy, a golden peach in color, the tight, toasted-marshmallow head rising quickly, two fingers deep. The aroma is peppery, with a bright lemony-orange dominating the spice. I breathe in with the swallow, the pepper flavoring my mouth, the hops biting at my lips and the underside of my tongue. The blistering on my gums is a bit numbing and I’m enjoying the fact that although this is well balanced despite the deScription, the bittering is intense. The malt is a solid foundation, but it’s a pedestal and not a partner. This is awesome; I love the tingling after each sip and the seemingly deliberate need for this damn beer to abuse the tender flesh of my mouth. - The creamy brew is heavy, sticky, thick and creamy on my tongue, the head a soft pillow on my lips. The lacing is thick and sticky, a beautiful etching around the inside of the glass. The finish is heavy, long and bitter; to the end, that pepper comes burning through in the aroma, growing more fierce by the quaff, eventually drowning the citrus. I am loving this and I know I’ll be seeing much more of this lady in my future.

Pours golden hazy. Good foamy head. Moderate carbonation. Nose is lemon, faint honey, resin. Taste is hop bitterness, malt is toast almost buried by hops which have a profile that is not that diverse. Like the intensity, drinkability, but not as balanced as some other DIPAs.

Faint orange peel and pencil shavings aroma. Cloudy orange, medium yellow head, nice lacing. Lemon zest, whole orange. Grapefruit peel finish. Full body, moderate carbonation, extremely bitter, resinous. Wow, the IBUs are off the chart with this one. I can tolerate quite a bit of the overhopping that has become in vogue, but I didn’t enjoy this very much. Tone it down.

Pours a murky deep golden with a luxurious white head. The head is so rich, once it recedes, literally the entire inside surface of the glass. Competing tangerine and sweet grapefruit nose. Nice and clean. Puffy mouthfeel. Alcohol is noted nearly immediately, but not before the abundance of citrus bursts.

Pours medium orange with a one finger off white head which fades to just a little lacing. Aroma is of a lot sweet malts, caramel, booze, some citrus, some pine, and some tropical fruits. Taste is very sweet with a lot of sweet malts and caramel dominating, with some mild citrus, pine and some light booze in the finish. Overall, I wonder if I got a bad bottle, has this is a rather disappointing beer that is way too sweet and boozy.

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle, bottled on July 10, 2015, from Sergio’s. Bright translucent orange with small white head. Aroma is grapefruit hops, medium/thick body, and good small bubble lacing. Taste is grapefruit hops, some dank, some herbal hope, some pine hops, some booze, and bitter finish. Quite flavorful, but heavier.

12 oz bottle from arminjewell. Nose is pine with mango and papaya changing to very tropical fruity as it is imbibed. Murky yellow orange with a medium off white head. Flavor is moderately bitter with malty and resinous notes. Good but not great compared to a lot of the newer brews.

Bottle, thnx to SummerSanta. Pours a slightly hazy, golden beer with a small white head on top. Aroma has massive citrus. grapefruits and piney resinous matters. Incredibly hoppy with a faint malty, boozy backbone. Flavor is bitter, hoppy, citrussy with some grassy, hay notes. Alcohol takes over in the back, giving it a sweet, sticky moutfheel and finish. Very well balanced, with soothing booze and no flaws. A bit one dimensional in the hop characters, but overall a very nice beer!
