3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft sample at Big Beers. So I guess this is the undercover contiuation of the batch series. Pretty tasty over all. Nice sweet malt to balance the big bitterness.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
12 ounce. Taste is sweet and malty. Big hoppy aroma. Some nice bitterness in the aroma. But then the taste goes orange sweet. I just want that sweet toned back a bit. But a nice double or red ale, however you want to call it.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 oz bottle. Pours a slightly hazy deep orange copper color with a small off white froth. Aroma is mostly piney, some definitely malt base, sweet and bready with a slight cake note, some citric fruits coming out as well, marmalade and sweet orange. Flavor has a bit of oxidation, but with the malt backbone it gives sort of a barleywine character to it, whoa just noticed its 11 percent, really easy drinking for that abv. picking up some of the tropical character, and piney resinous hops, still with that sweet malt. Medium to medium full body and a crisp carbonation. Interesting beer.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
I got this beer from my local liquor store after it was sold out...
This beer was a gift from one of the people who bought the last six. Payís to be friendly.
This beer is everything itís hyped up to be.. The flavors are so well balanced yet distinct. Sweat, malt, gravy, pine, chestnut, citrus, desalinated axle grease, bread, fireworks, bacon and a pony. Well, thatís what it tasted like to me.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle: The aroma consists of moderate-heavy fruit, pineapple, caramel, grapefruit, and pine. It pours a transparent amber with a small off-white head that quickly fades to a soapy ring. The flavor starts with a quick dose of fruit with faint pineapple. There are some spicy caramel notes in the background. The finish has citrus notes and light-moderate grapefruit. Itís medium bodied with mild/soft carbonation.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cherries, roasted malts, and decent amount of hops on the aroma and palate. Coming in at 11%, this is nicely balanced!

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: OCT 9, 2012 355mL packaged 9/13/2012. Pours a clear, deep reddish amber with a medium, creamy, yellow head. Spotty, weak lacing. Nose is orange syrup, maple, mild cheese, strawberry cake, some freezer vegetables, sticky Grand Marnier. Taste is quite aggressive pine sap and pine needles slapping you in the face with a hefty dose of malt body. Ends up feeling rich, very bitter, dense, but with almost no tropical NZ hop character. Certainly malt forward with 100 IBU smackdown. Palate is thick, bitter, maple, sticky, small boozy heat. Not bad- but almost the exact opposite of every beer Iíve been enjoying lately. Not sure if Larry Bell reads ratebeer forums, but this is exactly what people are getting tired of: boozy, sticky, mega pine bitter, red Double IPA. Ughhhhh. 10/5/2012 6/3/6/3/12=3.0
355mL. Pours with a larger yellow head, excellent retention. Nose is more maple and barleywine character, orange syrup, some whiskey, orange liqueur. Taste is creamy, sweet, some barleywine toffee, warming alcohol. Works nicely as a barleywine. Iíd dump the DIPA moniker. 10/9/2012 7/4/7/4/14=3.6

3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Considering the pedigree-- Bellís batch 4,000 was a formative moment in my life-- this one is interesting, but does not quite measure up.
It also falls short of many of the recent "big red" competitors-- Blood of the Unicorn, Fixed Gear and Green Flashís redís come to mind, others seem to be springing up every day.
But mostly it falls short because there is this amazing nose-- the initial aroma is a really unique and interesting floral, fruity blend.
That aroma passes to a more alcohol-tinged roasted malt note as the beer sits, and the flavor does not reveal any of the interesting complexities that the nose does-- just tastes like a very bitter, strong red.
The worst part is I fear this wonít age as well as some of the older "batches". I still have some 4,000, 7,000 and 8,000 in my cellar and will cellar a couple of these, but not with the same anticipation.
Still a relatively interesting big red, but no need to deviate from the standard 1-10 scale for this one, as itís mostly a 5 or a 6.

2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle from Rickís in Alexandria. Served in a Bellís tulip. Pours amber with a moderate off-white head and some lacing. Nose has a bit of bready malt and some citrus hop notes. Slight pike. Flavor is fairly bitter and has quite a heavy booze kick.
