COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bell’s Wheat Project (2005) is an experimental foray into the development of complex flavors in beer. The Project comprises five new ales, four in series and one specialty strong product. The first four, Wheat 2, Wheat 4, Wheat 6 and Wheat eight are all made using 55% Wheat (either wholly or mostly malted) and 45% Barley malt. The barley malt makeup is exactly the same in each of the four and consists of three different malts. The total amount of grain in each of the four is also exactly the same, so each of them should have a virtually identical original gravity. The type and amount of hops in each of the four is exactly the same. And the processing through the brewhouse and fermentation is also exactly the same. The changing factors between the ales are the composition of the 55% of wheat used and the type and number of yeast strains used. In Wheat 2 the 55% of wheat is made up of two different kinds of wheat malt, and this ale is made with two different yeasts. Wheat 4 is made with four different wheats and four yeasts. Wheat six and eight made with six and eight wheats and yeasts respectively. The final product, Bell’s Wheat Love Ale, is made with the eight yeasts of Wheat eight and is a strong, but relatively light colored, “wheatwine.” 2. Basic Content List for the Wheat Series Wheat Two Wheats: White, Dark Yeast: Bell’s house ale strain, WLP410 Belgian Wit II Wheat Four Wheats: White, Victory, Toasted sprouts, Torrefied Yeast: WLP550 Belgian, WLP570 Golden, Wheat Two blend Wheat Six Wheats: White, Dark, Toasted sprouts, Torrefied, Red, Caramel Yeast: WLP500 Trappist, WLP530 Abbey, Wheat Four blend Wheat Eight Wheats: White, Dark, Victory, Toasted sprouts, Torrefied, Red, Caramel, Chocolate Yeast: WLP4000 Belgian Wit I, WLP565 Saison, Wheat Six blend

hazy yellowish orange appearance.....aroma of a belgian wheat (complete with honey, citrus hops, sugars, and spice); flavor is heavy in spice and sugars....somewhat like a wit, but nothing like a barley wine...maybe even an abbey trippel....the whole wheat project was a major success in my eyes....but calling this a barley wine is a crime

A pleasant wheat ale, hazy gold with a meager white head. Smells like a hefeweizen with some added juicy fruits, a floral scent, and a hint of the 8% abv. Wheat, yeast, banana, clove, and some alcohol pepper fill the mouth quite softly. An enjoyable, relaxing drink, but I’m not convinced that this is barley wine material.

This beer is very nice appearing. However, to call it a barley wine is really incorrect. This is really a belgium storng ale. It tastes very similar to Great Lakes Anniversary Ale. Both good beers, but very sweet with few hops to balance. Clearly well made.

Barleywine? I think not. Must be a typo. Pours cloudy orange, looks like watered down orange juice. Strong and pleasant banana clove aroma. Wheat malt dominates the flavor, with hints of vanilla and spice. Feels fizzy in the mouth. Finishes chalky, mildy sweet, with a hint of alcohol. For those that think German Hefes are too sweet, try this one. Good beer.

I really like bells but are they for real with this wheat stuff? I’ve only had two of them and I can’t imagine being able to tell the difference between the others. Only this one gets you drunk. It’s got a great rich taste. The aroma smells rubbery and awful. oh yeah, this is nothing like a barleywine. Who are the ad wizards that deemed it so? Because they are way off. I hate to say it but I know they had the best of intentions but the brewers probably wasted so much time conceiving this whole project.

Bottle, batch #7155. Poured a slightly hazy medium golden with a short cap of white head. Bananas, wheat, and cloves were predominant in the aroma, along with some caramel and a bit of alcohol. Clove presence was rather heavy in the flavor, and was complemented by the bananas and some sharp (lightly sour) wheat notes from the aroma and some orange peel. Smooth on the palate, with sour wheat and some alcohol around the edges and at the finish (along with some spices and a nice warming sensation). This was very tasty, and went down dangerously easily.

Pours a hazy amber orange with a thin, lightly-lacing white head. Sweet, complex lightly fruity and malty aroma has a good yeasty presence and some clove and citrus notes. Body starts with a full, viscous sweet maltiness and lots of tasty wheat. This is balanced with a very good, authentic bready German yeastiness and pleasant peppery clove spice. A very nicely balanced, complex and enjoyable wheat wine, which essentially tastes like a doppel-hefe-weizen. My favorite of the wheat series.

Hazy gold with an ever so fading head. Distinct apricot aroma with some banana, cloves and wheat tagging along. The taste is odd... I get the wheat, but it’s lighter than I would expect for the last one in the series. A very small pinch of corriander; it’s so light that a corriander-hater like myself can actually enjoy it. Bitter and almost a bit sour. A touch spicy. Doesn’t strike me as too ’clear’ in the flavors, but maybe a little time will let it shine out.

Bottle from Styles and BBB63. Pours a moderately hazy, light amber color. Decent white head which fades down rather promptly to a ring. Scant lacing is left behind. Aroma is wheaty, not quite as clovish as the six or eight, but seemingly fuller of bannana esters than the previous two. Sweet sugar in aroma also. Medium bodied, soft carbonation. Sweet residual candi sugar presence. Mild yeast presence, somewhat spicey. Decent beer, probably wouldn’t turn another away. An interesting project from the folks at Bell’s.

Cloudy light golden color with a thick head of eggnog colored bubbles that diminishes slowly to a thin covering. Fairly simple wheat aromas, with hints of bananas and cloves. A mild tripel a scent with a touch of honey and candi (7+). Thick near chew feel. Slightly mouthcovering. Very full flavored, and I really can not find a flavor that I would object to. Lots of wheat, some dry flowers, mild white pepper with a touch of alcohol. A long light spicy in the linger. I find this dangerously drinkable.
