Commercial Description:
Bell’s Wheat Project (2005) is an experimental foray into the development of complex flavors in beer. The Project comprises five new ales, four in series and one specialty strong product. The first four, Wheat 2, Wheat 4, Wheat 6 and Wheat eight are all made using 55% Wheat (either wholly or mostly malted) and 45% Barley malt. The barley malt makeup is exactly the same in each of the four and consists of three different malts. The total amount of grain in each of the four is also exactly the same, so each of them should have a virtually identical original gravity. The type and amount of hops in each of the four is exactly the same. And the processing through the brewhouse and fermentation is also exactly the same. The changing factors between the ales are the composition of the 55% of wheat used and the type and number of yeast strains used. In Wheat 2 the 55% of wheat is made up of two different kinds of wheat malt, and this ale is made with two different yeasts. Wheat 4 is made with four different wheats and four yeasts. Wheat six and eight made with six and eight wheats and yeasts respectively. The final product, Bell’s Wheat Love Ale, is made with the eight yeasts of Wheat eight and is a strong, but relatively light colored, “wheatwine.” 2. Basic Content List for the Wheat Series Wheat Two Wheats: White, Dark Yeast: Bell’s house ale strain, WLP410 Belgian Wit II Wheat Four Wheats: White, Victory, Toasted sprouts, Torrefied Yeast: WLP550 Belgian, WLP570 Golden, Wheat Two blend Wheat Six Wheats: White, Dark, Toasted sprouts, Torrefied, Red, Caramel Yeast: WLP500 Trappist, WLP530 Abbey, Wheat Four blend Wheat Eight Wheats: White, Dark, Victory, Toasted sprouts, Torrefied, Red, Caramel, Chocolate Yeast: WLP4000 Belgian Wit I, WLP565 Saison, Wheat Six blend

Golden color with an orange hue to it. Wheat head that leaves bits of lacing. Smells of apricot, straw, bubble gum, and coriander. Taste has some lemon, clove, coriander, and honey. Carbonation is bordering high, with a medium body. This was an interesting beer, wish I had a little more of it. Good stuff.

Bottle. Batch 7155. Bubblegum sweetness, some clove, tinny oxidization, lemon peel, alcohol, wheat and cut grass on the nose. Pours a thick and syrupy bold burnt orange. No head and virtually no hint of carbonation. Fairly thin on the tongue with still vibrant carbonation. Flavor is definitely going down hill. Some honey and spiced maple syrup. Sweeter malted wheat. Clove and anise... more alcohol and more oxidized notes as well. Thin body for a barley wine with a metallic and alcoholic finish. Shades of greatness here, but definitely past it’s prime. Thanks Todd!

batch 7155. Thanks to Axilla for sharing. Poured cloudy orangish brown with a small white head. Aroma of wheat, straw, with some slight fruitiness and hops. Tastes of strong wheat, fruity esters, lemon grass, and coriander. Alcohol warming in the finish.

batch #7155. Pours a hazy brown orange colored body with a small white head very much resembling freshly made (stirred) iced tea. The aroma has notes of wheat, clove, alcohol, and very mild bananas. The flavors starts with a nice balance of lemons and syrupy malts that gets taken over by a dry wheaty finish. Mild alcohol throughout.

Super thick syrupy brown orange with a thin off white head. Smell is lemon and slight wheaty funk. Flavor is light and lemony and yet funky dough with wheat in there too. Aftertaste is not too appealing and lasts a while. Too much wheat and funk for my liking but not dreadful. Thick with a medium body.

Hey, found notes for wheat love. This one actually still held up decently. Amber pour with a thin white head. Aroma has strong wheat and malt notes. Flavor was similar, some fruits and just a touch of hops. Finishes a tad watery.

Bottle courtesy of alexgash. Thank you!
Pours cloudy solid orange with a small beige head. Smell is intense wheat, some spicy clove, and a bit of citrusy orange along with an almost salty odd soy character or something unappealing. Taste is very wheaty and spiced with some orange again. Kind of like an imperial hefeweizen but with some strange flavor to it that I’m not enjoying. Something odd about it. Rich mouthfeel and a light bit of alcohol in the flavor.

Bottle from Illinismitty (he probably thinks I never rated this beer, I’m just really slow getting my ratings in)! Pours a very clear, rich golden color with a small white head and lots of sticky lacing. Aroma is very wheat like and has a lot of malt notes to it as well! Just the slightest hint of hops comes through in the nose (very slight). Flavor is sweet and fruit like with a strong wheat falvor in the back end of the mouth. Balanced and enjoyable with an incredibly refreshing finish on the palate. Thanks Sean!
