Commercial Description:
Bell’s Wheat Project (2005) is an experimental foray into the development of complex flavors in beer. The Project comprises five new ales, four in series and one specialty strong product. The first four, Wheat 2, Wheat 4, Wheat 6 and Wheat eight are all made using 55% Wheat (either wholly or mostly malted) and 45% Barley malt. The barley malt makeup is exactly the same in each of the four and consists of three different malts. The total amount of grain in each of the four is also exactly the same, so each of them should have a virtually identical original gravity. The type and amount of hops in each of the four is exactly the same. And the processing through the brewhouse and fermentation is also exactly the same. The changing factors between the ales are the composition of the 55% of wheat used and the type and number of yeast strains used. In Wheat 2 the 55% of wheat is made up of two different kinds of wheat malt, and this ale is made with two different yeasts. Wheat 4 is made with four different wheats and four yeasts. Wheat six and eight made with six and eight wheats and yeasts respectively. The final product, Bell’s Wheat Love Ale, is made with the eight yeasts of Wheat eight and is a strong, but relatively light colored, “wheatwine.” 2. Basic Content List for the Wheat Series Wheat Two Wheats: White, Dark Yeast: Bell’s house ale strain, WLP410 Belgian Wit II Wheat Four Wheats: White, Victory, Toasted sprouts, Torrefied Yeast: WLP550 Belgian, WLP570 Golden, Wheat Two blend Wheat Six Wheats: White, Dark, Toasted sprouts, Torrefied, Red, Caramel Yeast: WLP500 Trappist, WLP530 Abbey, Wheat Four blend Wheat Eight Wheats: White, Dark, Victory, Toasted sprouts, Torrefied, Red, Caramel, Chocolate Yeast: WLP4000 Belgian Wit I, WLP565 Saison, Wheat Six blend

Another recovery from the wilds of Michigan. This pours a slightly hazy (albeit with quite a bit of particles visible) orange, with a thin, quickly fading white head. The aroma is of wheat, a bit of sweetness, and a touch of citrus. The taste is an interesting one, the beginning and finish are of a wheat beer, with a barleywine like middle, there’s also an overlying banana flavor that blends in well. It has a nice long finish. Another fantastic beer from Larry Bell.

nice pour. smells like a belgian, looks like a belgian, tastes like a belgian...but it isn’t. despite the corny label i bought this one (kinda reminded me of someone’s 60’s panel basement). give credit where credit is due. not many are brewing experimentally with this kind of focus. so not everyone will appreciate when someone pushes the style envelope. bell is no hedgehog.

Did I find a beer from Bells that I didn’t really like? Okay, so I didn’t care for the Double Cream Stout. It was good, but...eh. This was just...well. Aroma was something like honey coated bubblegum. Appearance was orangish/yellow, nice whte head with some serious floaties going on. Mouthfeel was light, watery. Flavor was banana, bubblegum, wheatgrass with a subtle citrusy-floralness that was just odd. I just didn’t enjoy it very much. Reminded me somehow of an Imperial American Wheat Ale. Yeah, didn’t make much sense to me either.

Amber coloured body with a thin tan head. Aroma of fresh malt and hops along with sweet pit fruits and a bit of cherries. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong alcoholic flavours emerge and a bunch of nice sweetness fills the palate. Aftertaste is fairly nice, a bit strong - but easy to placate. Overall, a good beer, not absolutely amazing, but a good and very strong ale. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 19-May-2007 on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Pours a delicious cloudy orange color with a thin but lasting white head. Smells of citrus and yeasts and hints f alcohol and sugar. tastes sweet like a Belgian ale, with notes of vanilla, orange and syrupy sweetness. Alcohol is noticeable only in the finish, and alternates with a sugary/honey-ish aftertaste. Another fine Bells beer.

Pours a cloudy orange color with just a slight light fizzy white head. Very malty aromas, some caramel, and had a strong orange citrus smell resinating off of it. Taste has a lot of the orange in it also, very rich tasting. Has almost a Belgina taste to it. Its pretty sweet, i get some of that candy sugar in it. Big malt characters as well with some vanilla in the finish. Pretty smooth for 8%, finishes clean. Pretty good. A lighter barley wine, but pleasant.
