Commercial Description:
This beer is the first in Bell’s Wheat Project. Project comprises five new ales, four in series and one specialty strong product. The first four, Wheat 2, Wheat 4, Wheat 6 and Wheat eight are all made using 55% Wheat (either wholly or mostly malted) and 45% Barley malt. The barley malt makeup is exactly the same in each of the four and consists of three different malts. The total amount of grain in each of the four is also exactly the same, so each of them should have a virtually identical original gravity. The type and amount of hops in each of the four is exactly the same. And the processing through the brewhouse and fermentation is also exactly the same. The changing factors between the ales are the composition of the 55% of wheat used and the type and number of yeast strains used. In Wheat 2 the 55% of wheat is made up of two different kinds of wheat malt, and this ale is made with two different yeasts. Wheat Two Wheats: White, Dark Yeast: Bell’s house ale strain, WLP410 Belgian Wit II

Thanks to JohnC for bringing this to last night’s strong ale fest at pizza port carlsbad. This was a very interesting juxtoposition of a weat beer and a belgian strong. Heffeweizen notes played with belgian yeast on both the nose and mouth. Body was very soft and smooth. I emjoyed this and would like a few bottles for further contemplation.

Hazy, deep straw body with a collapsing white, lacy head. Aroma of clove, banana, mild electrical fire, lemon peel, and lightly toasty wheat. Flavor is clove-like and oaky with medium dry honey notes, considerable hop character and relatively significant bitterness with a light aspartame quality in the finish. Medium fullness with some fizz, but not excessive. A good, fairly bitter wheat beer. Thanks TannerTavernboy Eric.

Orange in color, moderately hazy, with a massive, frothy antique-white head. Yeasty aroma, some sourdough bread, wheat hulls, nectarine, cloves - a lot of Belgain Wit characteristics in the nose. Grainy flavor with some fruity, peachy notes and a fairly dry finish. Very solid.

Murky amber color with no head. Interesting nose of spices (corriander), yeast, bread, and wheat. It strikes me as more of a Tripel/Wit cross. Strong wheat and yeast taste with a quiet malt base. Wow... a very solid American Wheat.

Bottle: Orangish straw, thick haze, moderate foamy white head, fairly nice lacing.   Wheaty nose, very slight citrus and clove.   Wheaty on the tongue, very smooth, clean finish.   Touch of apple or pear skin at the exit.   Did I say smooth?   Big in body, fairly robust mouthfeel.   Probably one of the better American Wheats I have had.   I am very happy it doesn’t have that fart/sulfur tinge to it, as most American Wheats seem to have.   Thanks Michael for this one!   Totally sessionable this one is...

Poured into my weizen glass with much anticipation. Pours a very hazy, unfiltered copper with a small slightly off-white head. Lots of carbonation moving around in the glass. Aroma of mainly banana and clove, a bit of citrus. Flavor is sweet on the lips, and the flavor is much like the aroma. There are also some spices in the beer as well. The hops were well done in this beer, showing up nicely in the finish (for the style). This gets a 4 for palate due to the medium bodied mouthfeel of the beer. Lots of wheats get ripped for being watery, but this is definitely not. Bell’s does wheat and does it well. I’ve got a 4 and 6 waiting in my fridge and I can’t wait to try them!.

Bottled. Batch 7083. Sampled alongside the Wheat Four. Pours a big head in my hefe glass. More bubbles than the Four. Smell is a bit simpler, too: a light horseblanket under a touch of clove and trace of banana & citrus. Golden color with a blush of red like a good American ale. Very clear for a Bell’s, I had to look hard to see the finely distributed floaties. First taste impression is of an American version of a Weizen; slight bananas, but with a gummy yeast aftertaste. Carbonation is pretty low, leading to a watery mouthfeel. Distinguished in being a wheat beer that tastes nothing like the usual pale lager, but after that, um… undistinguished. Conditioning yeasty remains in the bottle. Well, I’ve got a sixpack, I’ll lager it in the fridge and try again.
