GeneralGao (2726), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Feb 10, 2008 Draft at Eccentric Cafe. Served in a tulip glass. Poured a hazy brown color with a faint reddish hue. The head was foamy and off white with good retention and lacing. It smelled of sour fruits, especially cherry. medium bodied with mouth puckering acidity on the tongue that peaked at about 6-7 out of 10. The flavor was dominated by sour fruit, particularly cherry and a bit of apple. There may have been some oak as well. Malty caramel and molasses peeked through in the middle bringing some delicate sweetness with them. The finish was tart with some lingering light brown sugar. Good beer. kmweaver (2274), Nicaragua Apr 28, 2008 Draft @ Bell’s. Pours a hazy, deep peachy orange color; off-white head with glistening, fine-bubbled lacing; gorgeous lacing. Pleasant amounts of tart, pitty red fruits (strawberries, cherries), lemon rinds, red fruit leather, fermented apple juice (pretty dominant), and some funk; interesting little sour beer. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: lively carbonation, with tart peaches and cherries and strawberries; fruit leather; a touch of warming oak underneath; intricate, with some pleasantly sharp edges; tasty sour beer. Lengthy finish, showing some breadiness, tart cherries and peaches, and pitty red fruits. Glouglouburp (2157), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jun 6, 2008 In short: A sharp and aggressive but thin Flemish style Sour Ale
How: Tap at Bell’s Eccentric Cafe
The look: Cloudy copper with a small beige ring of foam
In long: Oak juice on the nose. Taste has cherries, caramel, oak, red apples. Carbonation is a bit too aggressive for the something thin body. Sourness level is medium-high. The beer is sharp and very tasty but it also lacks depth. A richer malted body would have helped. Still this is a very good beer and the last time I was so charmed by an aggressive Wild One it was a “she” and together we did… stuff that I cannot write here.
Silphium (2061), Lansing, Michigan, USA Dec 18, 2007 On tap at the Eccentric Cafe. Murky red-brown body, thin-medium tight off-white head. Bell’s didn’t mess around with the funk here; the beer is as sour and moldy as one could hope for, featuring wet socks, bile, and stomach acid, but in an oh-so-pleasant way. Also some musky dark fruit notes and molded wet hay. The funk reminds me of New Glarus Sour Brown, but the base beer that lurks beneath the sour yeast notes is pretty basic and could have lent more to the sum. Rather quick, watery finish with lingering wet hay notes. See also Stine’s review. ryan (1709), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Feb 24, 2008 Dark amber/brown body with a tiny off-white head. The nose is relatively light - lightly sweet with caramel, light cherry, blackberry and lots of oaky vanilla. The flavor is lightly sweet, lightly sour with toffee, grapes, cherry, oak and apple. Medium body is soft with light carbonation and a tart and tannic finish. Nice and interesting coming from Bells.
