AmEricanbrew (1218), Office of The President Elect,, Louisiana, USA Apr 30, 2008 Amber/red with a light tan head. First whiffs are strong oak wood with some tart berry fruits. Medium bodied and nicely carbonated. Spot on sour flavors here with mildly sweet caramel, then tart berry fruits with sweaty oak and a cellar mustiness, fairly complex. A nice lingering finish is only mildly sour. The only beer at the cafe’ that i had seconds of, very good. GeneralGao (2726), Iowa City, Iowa, USA Feb 10, 2008 Draft at Eccentric Cafe. Served in a tulip glass. Poured a hazy brown color with a faint reddish hue. The head was foamy and off white with good retention and lacing. It smelled of sour fruits, especially cherry. medium bodied with mouth puckering acidity on the tongue that peaked at about 6-7 out of 10. The flavor was dominated by sour fruit, particularly cherry and a bit of apple. There may have been some oak as well. Malty caramel and molasses peeked through in the middle bringing some delicate sweetness with them. The finish was tart with some lingering light brown sugar. Good beer. kmweaver (2274), Nicaragua Apr 28, 2008 Draft @ Bell’s. Pours a hazy, deep peachy orange color; off-white head with glistening, fine-bubbled lacing; gorgeous lacing. Pleasant amounts of tart, pitty red fruits (strawberries, cherries), lemon rinds, red fruit leather, fermented apple juice (pretty dominant), and some funk; interesting little sour beer. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: lively carbonation, with tart peaches and cherries and strawberries; fruit leather; a touch of warming oak underneath; intricate, with some pleasantly sharp edges; tasty sour beer. Lengthy finish, showing some breadiness, tart cherries and peaches, and pitty red fruits. brewblackhole (1260), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA Apr 20, 2008 Was surprised to see something like this at Bells. Red Fruit, almost punch like aroma, little indications that this may have some tarness to it. I had no idea about the style before I tried it. Taste was highlighted by a tart cheery raspberry fruitiness, soon to become more sour then tart, sweetness always around, alcohol is evident in a sweet strong way. A lot like Duchesse, not quite as sweet. Everyone at the table liked it MrBunn (1005), Western, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 21, 2008 Finally! Been trying to hit this on right at Eccentric Cafe for a while, so when this was on tap last night I was pretty pleased. Pours a dark reddish brown with little head. Aromas are full of sourness: apples, pie cherries, sour grapes and oak. They serve the thing way too cold, so the flavors did not really pop at first. Flavor is consistent with the nose, but has a fairly thin mouthfeel and does not have the sticky and sweet malt that goes with some from this style.
