>> Pours inky black with ruby highlights. Big cognac barrel nose, soy, sharp candied orange, Grand Marnier. Taste is tart lemon, some sugar, a tad headache inducing atop all of the roast and chocolate. Palate is rich, warming, spicy. Enjoyed this one nevertheless.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
bottle from tom10101, thanks bro. pours unclear very dark brown, almost inky black in fact, with a very nice creamy beige head, good retetention and nice lacing patterns. loads of raisins and dark fruitiness - cherries, plums, cognac-soaked über-ripened fruits along with a slice of their acidity, burnt caramel and dark roasted maltiness, fair chocolate amount too, smooth and bitter chocolate, tobacco, pepper, bitter coffee, hint of vanilla and soft yet tannic woodsy notes. moderate carbonation - slightly fizzy, medium body - oily and a bit sticky, slghtly boozy, woodsy and spicy-fruity-bitter coffee finish. very tasty and good!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
(Draught at the brewpub, Oct 31 2013) Pours pitch black with a small bubbly pale brown head. Aroma fruity cognac, woody, boozy with roast and chocolate malts. Palate initially contains tons of cognac and that doesn’t really dissipate. Underneath that is sweetish chocolate and a bit of wood at first. Mid-palate the wood comes a bit more to the fore but cognac and malts predominate. In the finish alcohol is quite noticeable along with normal Hellwoods bittering hops, dry and slightly roasted. Mouthfeel full, not too syrupy, very soft carb, lots of alcohol heat. Barrel owns this one, but it’s a lovely barrel. One feels as though one is drinking a good brandy hybridized with a good RIS. Lush.
