On tap @ RateBeer Best 2016. Black in color with some tan foam. Really strong roast, black licorice, and ash on the nose. I get a lot of brandy, too. Some sweetness of vanilla, chocolate, and molasses on the flavor, at least. Still a lot of roasted malt and coffee notes. Some barrel, chocolate syrup, and burnt sugar. It’s not bad. Not my favorite of the day.

500ml bottle. 2013 release. Pitch black in colour with a thin but lasting tan coloured head, light lacing. The aroma is very roasty, lots of dark chocolate, coffee, some smoke, wood, light alcohol. The flavour is lightly sweet, lots of wood, moderate alcohol, dark chocolate and huge roast, some dark fruits. Warming mouthfeel, medium/large body, moderate carbonation. Finishes long, warming, rich. Really nice stuff. Not many beers transfer well from the barrel for me but this is really nice. As a great richness to the Hellwoods.

draft at RBWG 2016. Nose is huge in cognac barrel influence. Almost grape and sweet. Taste is incredible. Soft coffee and deep dark chocolate. A light vanilla. Incredibly smooth only lightly warming. A great beer.

At ratebeer awards bottle share. Pours dark brown with a nice tan head and a chocolate and cognac aroma. There is a delicious chocolate and dark molasses flavor with a nice cognac finish.

Oily black pour, small head. Smells like a herbal bitter, very strong, cognac obviously. Flavor it’s huge, dark chocolate, candy fruit, very full bodied, no harshness despite alcohol warmth, very well balanced. Dessert in a glass, exceptional.
