Taste is sweet, bitter and malty with roasted malts, burnt caramel, toffee, burnt wood, cognac, hay, salty liquorice hard candy, moist soil, raisins, prunes, bitter chocolate, dark roast coffee, soot, resin and alcohol. Mouthfeel is soft, tiny oily, roasted astringent slightly boozy and near full bodied. Finish is tiny sweet, bitter and malty with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, cognac, burnt wood, soot and alcohol. Tasty…

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sample @ RBWG, Asheville. Deep brown with a modest head. Has that chemical ink cartridge aroma that you sometimes get from dark roasted malts. German chocolate cake. Earthy ash, rocky road fudge. Slightly boozy. Fat and substantial. Straight-forward, but not unpleasing.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
My Bottom Line:
Roasted malts and their heavy bitterness take hold of this Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout, as molasses and dark chocolate whip up an enticing base to furrow through.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the blackened darkness.
-The finish is also quite wooden.
-Although this batch has been out for a while, the heavyhanded roastiness makes me believe this bottle is a little too young in its evolution.
-Green hops tag along the portentous roastiness.
-Light cognac heat adds to this brew’s depth.
-Mouthfeel is rich and velvety.

Bottle split at Bruce’s tasting lab, from an IP trade with a Canadian fella on BA, 08/04/14.
Pitch black with a good sized dirty tan head that thins to a covering and edgework.
Nose is dark roast, restrained alcohol, cognac evident, bitter orange, hoppy wafts, bitter chocolate.
Taste comprises dark chocolate, spice, roast malt, well tuned cognac BA in force, bitter orange peel, hoppy waistcoat.
Full bodied, fine carbonaton, lightly warming booze at the close.
Solid BA impy - lovely stuff!

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle shared in London - thanks to the Colinator. Pours deep black-brown with a frothy, beige head. The aroma holds a lot of charred wood, baking cocoa, some earth. Medium to big sweet flavor with lots of oily chocolate, some nice burnt oak, scorched earth. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming to finish with lots more dark, bittersweet chocolate, burnt wood, bitter earth. Solid.

Bottle thanks to Colin. It pours darkest brown with a tiny tan head. The nose is rich, roasty, earth, cognac, cocoa, vanilla, toasted coconut and toffee. The taste is rich, oily, toast, deep roast, earth, coffee, mild acidity and toasted coconut with a dry, fairly short finish. Fullish body, fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Pretty nice stuff. Smells amazing.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pitch black pour, strong dark fruit aroma, some roasty malt, some barrel, some anise. Very nice stuff, lots of smooth malt, some soy, some coffee. I’m a bigger fan of cognac barrel than cognac, i think.
