2014/01/14 - Pours an opaque, dark brown cola colour with a two-finger, fizzy, khaki coloured head that quickly reduces to a lasting surface film. Aroma is toasted/smokey malts, chocolate and sour brett funk (lemon and cranberries?). Taste is lemon, smokey malts, mild chocolate notes and a sweet and sour acidic aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium, with lively carbonation and a tart, drying finish. Interesting mix that plays well together. Well done. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle: Poured a black color stout with a nice large brown color head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with nice funky Brett notes also observable. Taste is a mix of roasted malt with some funky Brett notes and a dry finish with some vinous and oak notes also noticeable. Body is about average with good carbonation. Nice level of complexity while retaining some drinkability.

500ml bottle from the brewery. Pours an opaque black colour with a small tanned head that reduces to a ring. Aroma is fantastic. Complex fruity aroma with notes of plum, raisin, and dark cherries. Taste matches the aroma with some red wine notes and oaky finish. The high alcohol content is concealed well. However it leaves a long warming feel in the chest. To sum up: 1 part of oak aged shiraz+1/2 part of porter+1/2 part of club soda = Donkey Venom:) Not bad

Appearance: opaque deep brown with one finger of thin beige head diminishing rapidly to a thin ring, moderate lacing. (4/5) Aroma: tart red wine, dried fruit, chocolate, oak, leather. (8/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate tart, moderate-low bitter. (8/10) Medium-full body, moderate carbonation, medium duration moderately tart finish. (4/5) Whoa. That’s a Baltic that might make you change your mind about Baltics. I usually find the style to be too sweet, often to the point of being sickly, but this is all about the tart. In fact, the vinous tart, and to a lesser degree, the oaky woodiness, dominate this so completely that I’m not getting much of the “Brettanomyces and other bugs” it was supposedly aged with, at all. To the point where I’m equal parts disappointed and intrigued by the hypothetical: “What would happen if I aged this for a year or three, just to give the Brett a chance to really take hold?” The other really noteworthy thing about this is the thing that’s barely noticeable at all. Sort of a “Hound of the Baskervilles” thing, if you follow: the ABV. This is almost 10%, but if it’s a sipper at all - and I submit it need not be - it’s because the vinous tart makes you adopt red wine drinking behaviour, not because it’s hot, because it isn’t. At all. In fact, it’s dangerously easy to drink. All of which isn’t to say I consider this without fault. It’s got a fairly serious flaw, and I’m not being facetious at all here: it’s too simple. This is all about the big barrel woody tart, and nothing else. “All right, all right!” I hear you say, “Bottom line it for me. Enough waffling. What’s your opinion of it?” Well, I’ll tell you this: it’s good enough that I don’t regret drinking a porter during the summer. ‘Nuff said? (16/20)

(Bottled on August 14th, 2014.

Funkfest 2016. Where else can you get Bellwoods for the same price as everyone else. The sour balances the sweet very nicely.

Draft. I guess its an imperial version of one of those old-school porters. Its okay, don’t know what a brett barrel is but this had a medicinal funk to it, decent.

Well it poured like a porter and then you go in for a whiff and you get massive sour vinous notes, followed up by leather and chocolate cranberries. Tastes of wine, vinegar, and chocolate. Finishes way to sour for my liking. I feel like I could close my eyes and wouldn’t even know it is a porter the way the sour dominates all other expected flavours. This beer didn’t really work for me.

Aroma of very dark chocolate and sour. Taste is fruity dark chocolate up front with sour leather, earth and wood coming in pretty quickly to take its place. There is a bit of cheesy funkiness in there as well. The sourness can be quite punchy if you take a big gulp of this. Overall a fun beer. I wish it was just a little less sour though.

Pours a good black with a small beige head that leaves good lacing. Nose is of cherry, roasted malt, alcohol and light vinegar. Taste is of chocolate, fruits and red wine-like grapes. Vinous with a moderate body and carbonation. A pretty good flanders-ish porter!

Bottle (500 ml) shared at tasting. Dark brown with a medium beige head leaving good lacing. Aroma is super fruity with brettanomyces, vanilla, roasted malts, chalky notes and cocoa powder. Taste isn’t too sweet but the fruity brettanomyces, despite being quite present, is never overwhelming. There’s roasted malts, cherries/vinous notes, vanilla, oak and cocoa powder. Medium body. Medium carbonation. Fruity finish with a mild lingering oak spiciness. Very good brett Porter with amazing fruity features. Not too sour and super flavorful.
