COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This barrel aged, slightly tart farmhouse ale is subjected to a bug battle for 4-6 months prior to serving. Bottles are refermented in the bottle and 7.3% ABV. Initial batch was released as Barrel Aged Farmhouse Saison. Barrels used are repurposed cider and wine barrels pitched with Brett Bruxellensis and Lambicus. Different barrels are blended for each bottling. Forthcoming labels will indicate bottling date for those interested in tracking the idiosyncrasies unique to each blending.

500ml bottle in a tulip. Pours hazy golden with a white head. Aroma of dry Brettiness, some pale malts, light wine and oak notes, some fruity notes from the Brett, and some light tartness. Flavor the same. Average texture. A really cool beer.

Hazy blond body with decent white head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is slightly funky from the brett’s presence, citrus and honey along with some yeast and dough. The mix of brett, citrus and oak gives the beer a cedar impression. Oak and white wine is much more present in taste. There is a nice brett tartness, also rich belgian yeast and dough flavor. Full bodied and fluffy, lively carbonation but small bubbles and falls off quickly. An interesting take on the saison style. It has the american experimental personnality (brett, wild, barrel aged) with the belgian tradition (full bodied and yeasty/spicy). Unfortunately, It falls short on both ends as it is not as complex/spectacular as the best American saison/sour ale nor as impeccably executed (especially for the carbonation) like the best belgian example of the style but still a good and unique experiment. Overall, this is a good first impression from Bellwoods and I’m looking forward to try more of their offerings.

UPDATED: APR 16, 2014 This bottle says 7.2% ABV, thanks to Hammy78 for this one! Pours a really hazy pale golden with a small white head that leaves good lacing. Nose is fruity, spicy and a little dusty. Taste is indeed fruity, dry. Some fresh cereals in the flavor department but it is mostly citrusy and fresh. Gently tart. Finish is lightly bitter, drying. Body is light to medium, mouthfeel really airy with the higher order carbonation. Not bad at all, just not as good as I thought it would be. Maybe the brett didn’t develop as much in my bottle?

A little footy/yeasty, has a nice thick head though. Sweet, a bit fruity but with sticky pale malts. Maybe a touch of spice. The brett does not seem to have kicked in yet.

A hazed blonde saison with a thin lacing white head. In aroma, sweet fruity malt with pineapple, Brett, lemon, very nice. In mouth, a smooth sour puckering malt with light acetic notes, Brett, very nice and fruity yet complex. On tap at brewery.

Bottle from my Secret Santa, huge thank you robinvboyer. Hazy yellow colored beer with huge white head towering over my glass. Tart aroma lemon, grapes, yeast, spices funk. Tart taste with medium sweet malty base, grapes, citrus, oranges, yeast, spices, wood. Alcoholic bitterness in finish. Delicious beer, nice complemented potato pancakes.

abv says 7.2%. Golden hazy colour with a white frothy and fine bubbled head. nice big rich aroma and very well put together, woodsy, esters, honey and some green apple and hint of some herbal notes. Rich palate that is amplified by carbonation, but it does have quite the peppery bite and is made in a very balanced styled despite the ample amount of tartness and citric acid like notes. Very nice and balanced brew.

Batch 3, bottled September 11, 2013. 500 mL bottle from the brewery, served in a branded snifter. Pours hazy golden with a medium off-white head that fades to a thin remnant and leaves a small amount of fine lace. The nose has notes of apple cider, sour fruit, grapes and oak, along with grass, flowers, pale malts and a beautifully complex barnyard note. The flavour is mildly tart throughout with a moderate malty sweetness. There are notes of sour fruit, white wine, oak, Belgian spice and dust. Barnyardy, earthy notes come through as well. The finish is long and tart, but also spicy and malty. Well balanced as the brew is throughout. Overall, this is an excellent barrel-aged saison with Brettanomyces. Surprisingly complex and cidery, this is a truly excellent brew. 2014-02-16

February 13, 2014. 500mL bottle from Bellwoods bottleshop. Sourness in aroma with farmhouse aromas underneath. Yellow gold colour. Sour plums and lemon flavours, straw and bread. Quite nice. I prefer the classic farmhouse over this one.

500mL bottle, sent from wilco (thanks a lot, Mike), pours a cloudy pale orangey yellow with a medium white head. Aroma brings out Belgian yeast, very light funk, and citrus. Flavour is quite complex, bringing out traditional farmhouse yeast notes, some brett funk, citrus zest, and even a bit of salt. Extremely refreshing, yeasty and well-balanced. A brett saison that can compete with the best of them. Wonderful.
