Bottle, sent to me by Robbie-- thanks buddy! Dark brown, tan head. Nice roasty profile with a kiss of citrus hop character. Full bodied, a nice hoppy brown.

500 ml bottle from the brewery. Pours a nice deep brown colour with a thin brown head. Aroma is nutty caramel, some cocoa. Taste of caramel, roasted coffee, pine. Nice.

Pours hazy brown with a fat finger of loose rocky tan head diminishing gradually to a thin skim, patchy lacing. (4/5) Nose is roasty malts, coffee, dark fruit, light citrus, toffee malt, mild smoke. (8/10) Taste is mild sweet, moderate bitter. (8/10) Medium body, moderate carbonation, long roasty and slightly smoky finish. (4/5) What an interesting beer - it looks like a porter, tastes like a black IPA, smells like something in between. Hoppy and malty in balance, and much more interesting than your normal brown ale, but still largely within the definitions of the style if you’re a little flexible in your interpretation of the “Northern English Brown” variant. That said, it’s definitely much hoppier than typical examples of the style like Newcastle Brown or Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown. (16/20)

500 mL bottle at the Ashburnham Ale House. Looks like a porter. Smells and tastes like a Black IPA. Which leans to the malty side. A little. Not that that’s a bad thing.

Malty and boozy aroma. Opaque brown dark brown colour. Flavour of toffee, roasted chestnut, and dark cereal. Medium body with mild carbonation. Quite tasty.

Bottle: Poured a medium brown color ale with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of caramelized malt with light citrus notes is quite pleasant. Taste is also dominated by caramelized malt with light citrus notes. Light nutty notes are also discernable. Body is light with good carbonation. Good drinkability with just the right amount of complexity. Nicely done for the style.

Pours a medium brown with red highlights and a small beige head that leaves good lacing. Nose is of piny hops, nuts and light chocolate. Quite nice and more american than traditional, even better! Taste is lightly sweet but you don’t perceive it as it moderately bitter. Flavors are of roasted malt and piny hops. Finish is on heavy roasted notes but never acrid or ash-y. Body is medium and carbonation a bit spritzy but really medium-high. Overall a really nice american brown ale, Bellwoods really deserves the hype it’s getting!
