3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
500 mL bottle from the LCBO, served in a branded snifter. Pours hazy, slightly reddish brown with a small tan head that fades to a thin remnant and leaves a small amount of fine lace. The nose has notes of chocolate, caramel, nuts, pine and dark fruit. The flavour is balanced between medium sweet malts with chocolate, caramel and nuts, and subtle hops with pine and just a touch of citrus. A roasty note emerges towards the end, and it finishes with a medium length, hoppy-roasty finish. On the palate, it is light-medium in body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this is a nice nutty-chocolatey brown ale. Good balance and quite satisfying. The hops are delicate and elegant. 2014-03-07

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
500 ml bottle from the brewery, via my bro (thanks!), served quite cool in a tulip glass.
App.: Deep brown-black with a full, tan head.
Aroma: Strong dank hops with black pepper and hints of citrus peel, dark-roasted malts, so black and severe, more BIPA than Brown Ale...
Palate: Medium+ body, fine, fairly full effervescence.
Flav.: Much like the nose with big dank, peppery hops, faint citrus and big, black dark-roasted malts, a little black coffee as it warms, big and serious; dry with pretty good bitterness with a long roasted and resinous finish.
Grizzly indeed! Still comes off more like a BIPA than an American Brown Ale to me.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
(500mL bottle from brewery) Pours a murky med-dark brown with a big bubbly off-white head that lingers and leaves a bunch of lace. Aroma citrus, ripe fruit, a little grass/fresh pine, some slightly nutty/dark bread malt character, sweet. On the palate, sweet and hoppy at first, ripe fruit and citrus, caramel and lightly roasted malts. Drier in the middle, light toast, slight nuts, fresh evergreen, but those ripe fruity hops persist and take over again in the finish. Fruit makes the finish seem sweeter than it is, slightly bitter, slight roast but mostly leafy, fruity hops. Body is fairly light, carb soft. I wanted to like this more than I do, not bad but it just doesn’t quite come together for me. I like the hop-heavy approach but I think this is a bit in-between styles I like. Not quite an IPA, not quite a black IPA. Ergo good, not great.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
bottle. Dark brown colour, fizzy head. Hoppy citrus and pine. Not much malt at all. Its decent, but not balanced or really indicative of the style.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from brewery. Really like this! Pours murky brown with a quickly fading tan head and no lacing. Nose is sweet and grassy. Notes of roasted nuts, plums, Cheerios, fresh cut grass and maybe some pine. Taste is light/med sweet and medium bitter. Medium body somewhat sticky with an abrupt dry finish and a long lasting bitterness.

On tap at the brewpub. Brown, tan head. Aroma is spicey/herbal Columbus, pine, petrol. Taste is spice, petrol, not much malt, even for a hoppy American brown. Good, though.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
This brown ale poured a slightly cloudy, deep amber colour with a minimal , tan coloured head. Scents include ripe fruit, grassy hops, hay and leaves. First swig was quite hoppy off the start but tapers quickly. Flavours of spruce hops and ripe fruit, along with roasted malts. Finish was hoppy and had a medium bitterness lingering.

UPDATED: DEC 26, 2013 You can call this a brown ale if you want but it ain’t. It pours more like a porter: deep black with a thin milky off white cap. Tastes more like an American pale ale or mid-America ipa: pine, citrus & a brisk after taste. For some, it may not add up. For others -- hop heads, beer geeks & me -- it’s good stuff. Was expecting a boring brown ales that’d been hip in the ’90s. Instead I get a stealth hop bomb that is tasty, adventurous & quaffable.

Draft - Big pine nose and some toasted malts. Deep clear brown with a light brown head. Piney hop bomb with a tiny bit of roast but not much. Way off balance, just a brown IPA. Style is way off bit still enjoyable.
