At brewery. Pours a dark reddy brown with an off white head. Grassy, bready, caramel aroma... Woody, pine, citrus, a little dark fruit, orange... Good balance. Enjoyed this one.

Deep mahogany color. Very deep chocolate malt, woody character, with a touch of tobacco leaf notes. The mouth is very malty, med full bodied, rich and characterful. The wood and chocolate malt stand above the hops. Big woody chocolate finish. Excellent example of the style. Another winner from Bellwoods.

Rich, hearty, woody. Full on toasty malt with a nice hop sidekick. Well put together and dangerously drinkable.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
The last beer of my recent run to Bellwoods, which resulted in discovering some very nice beers. Didnít expect the hoppy IPA-ness of this one. Pours a dark opaque brown with a finger of tan head. Nose of this guy is being taken over by piney hops. The taste is cereal, but mostly HOPS (pine, floral). The hops bitterness lingers, but isnít unpleasant. Not a bad beer but the hops supersedes the brown ale characteristics.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
My Bottom Line:
Citrusy fruitiness and delicate hazelnut sweetness move into earthy, coniferous hop resins in this slick Brown IPA.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A healthy head of foam tops the darkest brown.
-Milk chocolate and candied fruit also roam about.
-This is as professionally rendered as any other Bellwoods bottled brew Iíve had.
-Mouthfeel is quite effervescence and drier than expected.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
2014/05/02 - Pours a hazy brown-mahogany colour with a creamy tan head that slowly reduces to a surface film. Aroma is pine, caramel, citrus, chocolate and roasted malts. Taste is caramel, nuts, cocoa, roasted malt, pine and mild citrus. Starts of sweet and slightly citrus and shifts to a roasted nut and piney bitter finish. Body is medium to thick with smooth carbonation and a drying finish. Not my favorite from Bellwoods, but still, it is rather tasty.

Bottle from the brewery. Pours a deep hazy brown with a generous tan head that fades slowly. Nose is roasted malt and chocolate with a big helping of pine. Flavour is light sweet chocolate with some coffee but nicely bitter like a black IPA rather than a brown ale. Medium palate with average carbonation and long dry bitter finish. Enjoyed this.

Light brown, fruity, hoppy aroma. Sweet and spicy. Reminds me a bit of Maduro, with more limey hops.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
500 mL bottle from the LCBO, served in a branded snifter. Pours hazy, slightly reddish brown with a small tan head that fades to a thin remnant and leaves a small amount of fine lace. The nose has notes of chocolate, caramel, nuts, pine and dark fruit. The flavour is balanced between medium sweet malts with chocolate, caramel and nuts, and subtle hops with pine and just a touch of citrus. A roasty note emerges towards the end, and it finishes with a medium length, hoppy-roasty finish. On the palate, it is light-medium in body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this is a nice nutty-chocolatey brown ale. Good balance and quite satisfying. The hops are delicate and elegant. 2014-03-07

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
500 ml bottle from the brewery, via my bro (thanks!), served quite cool in a tulip glass.
App.: Deep brown-black with a full, tan head.
Aroma: Strong dank hops with black pepper and hints of citrus peel, dark-roasted malts, so black and severe, more BIPA than Brown Ale...
Palate: Medium+ body, fine, fairly full effervescence.
Flav.: Much like the nose with big dank, peppery hops, faint citrus and big, black dark-roasted malts, a little black coffee as it warms, big and serious; dry with pretty good bitterness with a long roasted and resinous finish.
Grizzly indeed! Still comes off more like a BIPA than an American Brown Ale to me.
