The Russian Imperial Stout is a very strong variant of the stout originally developed by English brewers in the 18th century to export to the court of Catherine the Great in Russia. This extremely dark and complex beer has intense aromas and flavours of malt, burnt chocolate, dark fruit, fresh earth and vanilla. A portion will be aged and released next year.

Yeast: American Ale
Hop: Warrior

Draught at the brewpub
Black color, with brownish creamy head. Unexpected aroma: glue and flourpaste. Full bodied; good chocolate flavor with traces of roasted malts and hint of liquorice; comforting alcohol warmth; strong bitterness.
Excellent chocolatey Imperial Stout, too bad for the aroma.

Near black, thin head, very fruity, fruitcake and raisiny. Big body, rich malt sweetness....good balance of fruits.

A deep dark stout with a thick dark mocha head. In aroma, a bitter chocolate with iodine, molasses, ashes and loads of alcohol. In mouth, a smooth bitter chocolate coffee, iodine, licorice notes, intense and warming. Tasted at GRMs tasting.

Deep black pour. A thick brown head. The aroma is quite rich and coffeeish. A touch of berry fruit along with some intense pepper and roast. A little bit of savoury sort of black licorice and light spice. More like carafa special than roasted character (dark but not ashy) with a fairly savoury component to it. Sticky and intense without being overly cloying or sweet. Very herbaceous flavour. Despite all of the things I like about it, it leaves me kind of wishing for some more sweetness and chocolate character. It leans toward the savoury/salty side of impys more than sweet and chocolatey. Personal preferences aside, it’s a very well-constructed brew. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Enjoyed on tap at the Brewery Market. Pretty good drinkability for the level of alcohol. Black with a bit of a mocha head. Good roasty aroma. Taste is bitter with a sugary finish. As it warms, more hops present (second sample), the Warrior burst through. Still, too much sweetness, would like more balance. Would like thicker mouthfeel.

UPDATED: NOV 21, 2012 2012-11-21. No notes. Seemed fruitier, and a little less full bodied than previous samples. Still quite nice, but a little thinner and less richly delicious than last time. On tap at Bellwoods, Toronto

2012-09-22. Black body with a nice tan head. Syrupy dark legs on the glass. Rich dark malt core, good amount of roast and something else, lightly fruity "imperial stout melange", bitterness is subtle but finishes intriguingly and lingers long into the finish. 8+ Aroma is nice, modest roast, muted chocolate, modest alcohol. 7+ Very smooth full bodied palate. Carbonation is just a touch light. 4+ Not super complex, just very rich and delicious. On tap at Bellwoods, Toronto

On tap @ BarVolo during Bellwoods tap takeover Sunsplash event. I tried to get to the sour cherries cask of this, but it was gone before I could get to it. Very hearty near black with a chunky brown head. Tarry burnt malt profile, bitter bakers chocolate, light ash, light licorice, hoppy bitter finish. Very big brew, dense.

Very dark brown pour whose edges you can actually see through. The beige film is thin and disappears rather quickly. Heavily roasted malts dominate the aroma, bringing forth earthy, peaty edges. Oriented more toward the coffee than the chocolate side of the spectrum, it’s a relatively dry impy with a generous green backbone, very herbal, almost minty, adding a complexity of a registry rarely encountered in those beers who usually pull out their structure from various sugar or vinous nuances. Here, we have neither. Inky, salty finish is perhaps a bit rough edged, yet the general texture is great, thick, chewy, punctuated with just the right, conservative bubble level and roasty, almost astringent enough to kick out any impression of syrupiness. Not precisely my favourite type of beer but I reckon this is solid stuff indeed.

September 22, 2012 - The Golden Tap Awards at Beer Bistro. Bottle sample. Nearly opaque brown-black, quite thick looking, had a smallish lovely light brown creamy/foamy head. Aroma has nearly no alcohol to it, but there is medium roast malt, light coffee, some crushed mint leaf - nutty and floral; odd. Taste- oh yeah, there’s the impy! - coffee, baker’s chocolate, molasses, very very herbal, middling alcohol, some mint and ... raisin jack? Average body, slick and sticky, quite airy and lively, builds a to a long bunt/bitter finish, really sticks to the palate - nice!

Bottle sample at The Golden Tap Awards, beerbistro. Pours a thick black with a spare semi-lasting frothy light-brown fizzy/creamy beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, alcohol, light leafy hops and dark fruit. Flavour of dark roasted malt, chocolate, lots of alcohol, dark fruit, brown sugar and coffee. Boozy finish. Medium bodied. This is a big beer! Good but big!
