The Russian Imperial Stout is a very strong variant of the stout originally developed by English brewers in the 18th century to export to the court of Catherine the Great in Russia. This extremely dark and complex beer has intense aromas and flavours of malt, burnt chocolate, dark fruit, fresh earth and vanilla. A portion will be aged and released next year.

Yeast: American Ale
Hop: Warrior
Malt: Pilsner, Wheat, Hops, Crystal, Smoked, Chocolate, Black, R Barley, Molasses

Tasted a small sample at a BeerThief gathering. Beer is black and very leggy. Nice hop aroma as well as the solid good roast, but not really much chocolate. Taste is all roast and some coffee very late. The finish is a very good dry, but with an edge to it. Another fine Imperial Stout from Bellwoods.

beautiful bottle shared by dennoman. Pours intense black with a intense purple brown hue. Roasty coffe aroma’s, backed by subtle blackcurrent and elderberry notes. Thick oily body with a marvellous chocolate and coffee roast taste, and fruity syrupy hints. Definite like!

Bottle from the September release. Pours a completely opaque, motor oil black with a tan head that dies down to a thin layer. Smells of deep dark rich chocolate malt, coffee. Tastes of malt and a lot like coffee, has a bit of chalkiness to it as well, you can almost chew it. Really good.

On tap at Bar Hop. 10% and noticeably so. Quite boozy. Aroma and flavours of bitter dark chocolate and coffee. Quite warming.

January 18, 2014. 500mL bottle from Bellwoods bottle shop. Cherries and chocolate on the nose. Lovely lacing; very dark in colour. Touch of sharpness, as expected from an imperial stout. Quite nice.

pours oily almost black with a very nice and reviving crema head, good retention and lacing. burnt malts, strong bitter chocolate and pure bitter cacao, roasted molasses, coffee - creamy latté - just a hint of lactose, very smoky, licorice, spices, blackberries, roasted acidity, pinch of dirt. moderate to low carbonation, medium to full body - oily, a bit sticky, grassy-resinous-bitter coffee-smoky finish. creamy and smooth mouthfeel. complex and very tasty. loved it!

750ml bottle. Opaque black, gorgeous mocha brown head. Aroma of charred, burnt, dark roasted malts. Coffee, bitter cocoa, soy, and some light pine. Mouthfeel is nice, could be a touch thicker though. The carbonation is spot on! The finish is intensly bitter, grabs your palate and won’t let go. Subtle cocoa round it out with more intense charred, roasted malts. This is a huge beer, very impressive!

UPDATED: NOV 21, 2012 2012-11-21. No notes. Seemed fruitier, and a little less full bodied than previous samples. Still quite nice, but a little thinner and less richly delicious than last time. On tap at Bellwoods, Toronto

2012-09-22. Black body with a nice tan head. Syrupy dark legs on the glass. Rich dark malt core, good amount of roast and something else, lightly fruity "imperial stout melange", bitterness is subtle but finishes intriguingly and lingers long into the finish. 8+ Aroma is nice, modest roast, muted chocolate, modest alcohol. 7+ Very smooth full bodied palate. Carbonation is just a touch light. 4+ Not super complex, just very rich and delicious. On tap at Bellwoods, Toronto

Bottle from brewery. Pours black black with dark brown head. Roasty and chocolatey aroma, with a distinct sourness to it, which seems a little out of place. As it warms I get more fruit - particularly fig. Very intense taste - roasty and bitter, a little licorice and molasses. A thick beast of a beer. This is good stuff.

Dark black pour. Brown head and clinging lace. Slight smokey roasted malt aroma. Sweet malt flavour. Bitter finish. Excellent brew.
