The Russian Imperial Stout is a very strong variant of the stout originally developed by English brewers in the 18th century to export to the court of Catherine the Great in Russia. This extremely dark and complex beer has intense aromas and flavours of malt, burnt chocolate, dark fruit, fresh earth and vanilla. A portion will be aged and released next year.

Yeast: American Ale
Hop: Warrior
Malt: Pilsner, Wheat, Hops, Crystal, Smoked, Chocolate, Black, R Barley, Molasses

Deep black pour. A thick brown head. The aroma is quite rich and coffeeish. A touch of berry fruit along with some intense pepper and roast. A little bit of savoury sort of black licorice and light spice. More like carafa special than roasted character (dark but not ashy) with a fairly savoury component to it. Sticky and intense without being overly cloying or sweet. Very herbaceous flavour. Despite all of the things I like about it, it leaves me kind of wishing for some more sweetness and chocolate character. It leans toward the savoury/salty side of impys more than sweet and chocolatey. Personal preferences aside, it’s a very well-constructed brew. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

beautiful bottle shared by dennoman. Pours intense black with a intense purple brown hue. Roasty coffe aroma’s, backed by subtle blackcurrent and elderberry notes. Thick oily body with a marvellous chocolate and coffee roast taste, and fruity syrupy hints. Definite like!

Bottle thanks to robinvboyer, thanks a lot! Pours a pitch black and is topped by a "roux" head that fades fast and leave some lacing. Nose is of coffee and alcohol, not too deep. Taste is of fresh coffee, roasted malt and lightly vegetal. Roasted malt harshness is there, sadly. Body was medium-full and mouthfeel "fluffy". Alcohol is apparent a little. Cool to try but nothing special, good stout.

My Bottom Line:
Well-defined roasted malts create dark chocolate allusions while fieldberry fruitiness and alcohol warmth seal this really cohesive Imperial Stout.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam sits atop the pure blackness.
-Malt flavors are very nicely developed while avoiding the pitfalls of relying on heavy residual sugars.
-Roasted malt bitterness is set upon a pedestal by wooden hop resins.
-This may taste ’more serious’ than their Bounty Hunter, but it is just as much fun.

On tap at the brewery.

Bottle from the brewery dated September 4, 2012.
Pours pitch black with a silky brown head. Smells of coffee, tobacco, caramel and a fair smokiness. Really oily and thick body. Significant alchol warmth. Tastes of oats, plums, caramel and tobacco. Finishes with a certain stickiness. 2014-04-13
