3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 JoeMcPhee (7622) - Toronto, ON, Ontario, - NOV 18, 2012Deep black pour. A thick brown head. The aroma is quite rich and coffeeish. A touch of berry fruit along with some intense pepper and roast. A little bit of savoury sort of black licorice and light spice. More like carafa special than roasted character (dark but not ashy) with a fairly savoury component to it. Sticky and intense without being overly cloying or sweet. Very herbaceous flavour. Despite all of the things I like about it, it leaves me kind of wishing for some more sweetness and chocolate character. It leans toward the savoury/salty side of impys more than sweet and chocolatey. Personal preferences aside, it’s a very well-constructed brew.

500 mL bottle. A beautiful pour; black, with a large, sticky, brown head. Aroma is surprisingly mild, with only a little orchard fruit and milk chocolate coming through. Perhaps my nose is not working properly this evening. The flavour is surprisingly restrained as well, with only the alcohol at the end to give away that this is an Imperial. It’s good, and has some complexity, but I want it to be bigger.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Spab (1639) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - MAR 25, 2013
650 ml bottle from brewery. Pours an opaque, virtually black brown with modest but lasting light brown head. Aroma is quite smoky with licorice, coffee and some dark fruits. Flavour is quite roasty with sweetish anise, dark coffee and plum/fig. Some booziness in finish. Nice.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 hangunder (98) - Ontario, CANADA - MAR 24, 2013
Roasty, malty goodness. Nothing overly complex in the aroma, and not in your face either, but nice and balanced. Completely black, dark brown head, pours very thick. Taste is full of flavor, milk chocolate and hops on the frontend, maltiness in the middle and lingering hop bitterness and cocoa in the slighty sweet finish. The alcohol is fairly well masked for 10%. Heavy mouthfeel and mild-medium carbonation. Quite delicious.

650 mL bottle. Pours opaque, with a thin brown head. Aromas of dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, wood, prune, fig and alcohol. Richly sweet and well hopped. A thick coating mouth feel, medium to full bodied with low to medium carbonation. A warming alcohol tinged finish. Needs some rich roasted meat to stand up to this.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 neuromatt (858) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - MAR 6, 2013
On tap at the brewpub, served in a snifter. Pouts black with a small tan head that fades to a thin remnant and leaves a trace of fine lace. The nose has notes of roasted malts, dark chocolate, earth and dark fruit. The flavour is moderately sweet and moderately bitter with roasted malts, pine and earth. It closes out with a long bitter finish. On the palate it is medium-full in body with a creamy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, an excellent hoppy imperial stout. The hops are subtle, but provide just enough balance. Would be nice on a cool fall evening. 2013-03-06

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a huge dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of dry roasted malt with loads of black chocolate notes with medium bitterness. Taste is a good balance mix between some black chocolate notes with medium bitterness and some dry roasted malt with light lingering sweet notes and light coffee notes. Body is quite full with nice creamy touch and good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Well brewed without necessarily standing out from the pack.

A deep dark stout with a thick dark mocha head. In aroma, a bitter chocolate with iodine, molasses, ashes and loads of alcohol. In mouth, a smooth bitter chocolate coffee, iodine, licorice notes, intense and warming. Tasted at GRMs tasting.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 probstblueribbon (2378) - Nepean, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 11, 2013
Bomber shared at GRM’s. Oddly fruity molasses, licorice notes, some decent chocolate/coffe notes, a bit dusty, alright. Medium full body, soft fine effervescence, powdery. Chickory, green and peppery, oddly fruity still, a touch ashen, dark chocolate, molasses; sweet with good bitterness, a fair bit of alcohol and a long, inky molasses, licorice, dark chocolate/black coffee finish.
