Cask (gravity dispense) at Battersea Beer Festival on 10 February 2011. Dark red/brown. Very dry and roasty. Some chocolate. Firm, but quite light, mouthfeel. Certainly doesn’t have the sweetness often present in Oatmeal Stouts. Solid enough stuff.

Bottle. Very dark ruby appearing pitch with a fine beige top. Burnt grain aroma with hints of Crunchie and berry fruit. Coffee-dunked Crunchie hints, burnt toast, chocolate. Flimsy for an oatmeal- more like a schwarz. OK.

UPDATED: OCT 31, 2009 Cask conditioned gravity dispense Castle Caldecott. A black beer with off-white coloured bubbles. The aroma is dry and smoky while the taste is roasty with bits of chocolate. A touch of sweet oatmeal and a touch of dry roast makes for an interesting taste although there is no significant depth. Score 3.5 Subsequent rating scored 3.7. Average becomes 3.6

Cask handpump ’sample’ at the brewpub, Old Dalby, Leics/Rutland’ 23-01-09 and then in bottle 27-01-09 Pours very dark brown with an off white small bubbly head. The aroma is just a little weak but some malts and oat can be picked up. This was a little fruitier than I expected but very nice for it. There is a flourish of roasty flavours coming through and a dryness at the end A6 A4 F7 P4 OV14 3.5

Handpulled cask at the Malt Shovel. Northampton. Black with a good creamy beige unsparkled head. Dry in flavour without much malt profile. Smooth and easy drinking. knocking spots off most keg stouts.

A Sim rate (cask at St Albans BF): Tastes like celery salt. Very savoury and oily. Slight roasty flavour with a very bitter finish. Very bland aroma. What I can smell is nice - fruit, malt.... But not much and you have to struggle to smell it. Watery palate.
