DruncanVeasey (1913), No. 46, Leicestershire, England Dec 15, 2008 Bottle from Hinckley Tossco, looks filtered. Deep chestnut with a thick ivory collar. Nose swinging between rich, raisiny malt nuttiness, black cherry, sweet berry notes, herbal hop. Deep vegetal doppelbocky malt with toffee, plum and walnut coming out on top. Scorched Battenberg, roasted marzipan sweetness and cake, alcohol, nuthusk, black cherry, wood. Teaspoon of Kasteel. Rich, thick and malt-heavy despite the 4-hop cocktail. Needs some tweaking to let them breathe, but the bitterness is certainly there. Shades of Highgate Old Ember- that kind of big, boozy malt-led silky English sipper. Would struggle with 2 pints. Not my thing, but won me over.
MesandSim (4723), Highgate, Greater London, England Oct 22, 2007 A Mes rate. Gravicask at Nottingham Beer Festival.
Thick and dark amber red colour. Sweet fruit, heavy malt with some cereal, wheat and light hoppage. Nice sweet yet dusty finish. Unusual. Kind of half way between a bitter and an old ale. Ungstrup (11930), Frederiksberg, Denmark Jun 27, 2006 Bottle. A deep red beer with a slight hazy under a bubbly tan head. The aroma is sweet with notes of berries and fruit. The flavor is sweet with a strong note of toffee, combined with notes of fruits and berries - a mixture of red and blue berries from the forrest. The end is dry with a slight note of wood, and a short bitterness. leaparsons (4180), Leicester, Leicestershire, England Apr 25, 2006 Bottle conditioned. Dark mahogony/red in colour with a beige head. Aromas are soft toffee malts with mellow winter fruit. Some roast elements with earthy, spicy hops. Flavours are soft malts with lots of berry fruit. Quite gentle in character, but enjoyable. Dry, earthy hops towards the finish with a decent level of grapefruit bitterness. A decent BC beer.
