Skyview (4000), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA May 30, 2008 Sampled at Cellars Wine & Spirits in St Paul, Minnesota. Pours a semi-hazy orange amber brew (with particles) with an average sized off-white head that has some nice retention and some good lacing. Aroma of a heavy chardonnay white wine, some caramel malt, flowery hops and light pear fruit. Taste is full bodied, thick, fruity with flavors of sweet caramel, pears and a whopping alcohol burn. Finish is metallic from the high alcohol presence that over-powers some of the fruity and Belgian yeast flavors. OSLO (825), Perth, Australia May 29, 2008 [Bottle, rated blind] Pours clear orange with a tiny off-white head. Sweet aroma--a little fruit, but mainly just a lot of malt and some alcohol. Taste is sweet and malty with a good deal of alcohol burn. Medium-thin with a long finish. I really despise sweet, malty alcohol bombs like this. BeerGestapo (725), Windsor, Pennsylvania, USA May 15, 2008 (FRANCE) This Belgian style brew is courtesy of fellow knight The Captain, thx. Hazy orange / amber color with a med-white head. The aroma is of fruits and spices with a slight tart / alcohol feel.,But the 13% is well hidden !!!
Great label, and the best beer from france for me so far. Will drink again !! TheCaptain (526), Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA May 14, 2008 Bottle - 3 pack. Shared this with beergestapo in the Devonshire. Poured a slight hazy amber gold with a white head. Some aroma of white grapes similar to a wine. Pallet was smooth with a bit of sweetness, malts and very much a Belgian in character. Although 13% it was relatively mild and drinkable. Liked this, not just a clever label but a good Strong Ale as well. MrChopin (620), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 14, 2008 Pours golden with chunks of sediment and no head. Malt scents are super-dominant with butterscotch hints and an alcohol background. Taste follows the nose with extremely dry finish. The palate is quite smooth and vibrant despite looking like a poorly mixed smoothie. Jerre (1755), Waregem, Belgium May 13, 2008 Bottle, 25 cl. (Bought @ Van Uxeem)
Hazy amber color, white head. Aroma sweet, malts, bit fruity.
Medium body. Taste fruits, malts, bitterness, strong alcoholic.
Chantdaddy (19), New Jersey, USA May 10, 2008 38??? Are you kidding me!?!? The current rating of 38 is not appropriate for this beer...
Even though this beer is known as one of the strongest (or strongest) all malt Belgian ales, it deserves to be known as more than that. I’m not even going to get into the prowess it takes to make an ale, consistently, that is 13% (and appropriately carbonated). This is a GREAT beer. It’s smooth, the flavors are in balance (even with the high alcohol level)...yes, alcohol is evident, but that’s expected. This is one of those beers where it’s absolutely clear, especially to brewers, that the brewer has reached a very high level of mastery in his/her craft... to produce such a fine product when also trying to achieve such a high level of alocohol is not easy to do by any means. Excellent! Butters (1622), Virginia, USA May 5, 2008 Updated: Jun 7, 2009Moderately cleary golden color with mild particulate. Nose of clove, banana, and bubblegum, but most supprisingly of all, no trace of alcohol! Flavor of vanilla and pepper, and slightly citric but not lemony. Alcohol is not very perceptable in flavor but does exude a warming sensation in the belly. On of the best belgian strongs i’ve had. Cool name earns extra points.
