3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 asheft (2030) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - APR 13, 2009
[bottle--thanks, cgreb!]
Spicy hops in the nose, along with some ethanol and a little dried fruit. Hazy, dark yellow with a thin, white top. Sweet hops flavour develops into an assertive bitterness and then quite a bit of ethanol that comes off as whisk(e)y-like. Warming, clean finish, moderate carbonation.

UPDATED: DEC 7, 2011 I knew this was trouble when it poured clear gold. As if the big 13% on the label shouldn’t have put me off. Nose is sugar, honey, wheat, varnish. Tastes the same but with extra alcohol and harshness. Booo...
2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 lb4lb (2021) - Austin, Texas, USA - APR 11, 2008
Bottle shared at tasting. Thanks
Pours a clear golden color with no lasting head. Smell is all alcoholic malt. Very alcoholic in fact. Taste is alcohol, and sweet thin maltiness. Fizzy boddy, and still somehow not too difficult to drink despite the high ABV. A bit warming going down. Okay, but not something I want again.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 dirtymike (2016) - Manchester, New Hampshire, USA - JUL 24, 2003
Deep gold to light amber in color, small white lacey head.Aroma is sweet and has huge alcohol notes, and not much else.Burn baby burn!Alcohol and nothing else here, not anywhere near balanced, I love a good high alcohol beer but this is a waste of perfectly good malt and yeast.
1.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20 RAYBOY01 (2003) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - SEP 13, 2005
UPDATED: JUN 16, 2006 Sampled at Palmer Place, LaGrange, IL. Very unpleasant in several ways: The alcohol presence was, shall we say, lacking in subtlety. Actually the fumes made me jerk away from the glass. The cloying sweetness was just awful, even in small leisurely sips. Never again!
Rerate: First impression was, "What’s with all the floculate? My glass was loaded with white yeasties...some as big as a raisin. But my second tasting was that this might be my favorite French beer. i know that might be considered damning with faint praise. But the flavors of caramel, toffee, honey, and, yes, YEAST!!! was very well intermingled. I would probably bump this up to around a "3" or so.
1.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 3/20 GG (1980) - NorCal, California, USA - MAY 8, 2009
There is a beer for everyone. This, I am pretty sure of. This particular beer, is just not for me. What an absolutely horrible waste of a bottle, let alone the ingredient it took to make this "beer". This was nothing more that rubbing alcohol flavored with malt. I’m sure this beer would do great in removing spray paint from walls, removing the bumper stickers saying W 04 off of conservatives cars, and cleaning a wound after falling off a cliff from 40 feet. But to drink this and say it’s enjoyable is just too hard to comprehend.
The beer pours out medium amber color, slightly opaque with a scant off-white scummy head. Aroma is rubbing alcohol and raisins, a bit of yeast and just a whiff of something that resembled apple pie spices. That’s where anything worthwhile ends. The flavor is full of alcohol spikes, reminding me of drinking rubbing alcohol or some kind of mouthwash used in the Middle Ages. Mouthfeel was hot and burning, like taking a shot of cheap whiskey. The alcohol just kills any sort of flavor of the beer, and leaves your mouth gasping for air.
I have a pretty open mind about beers. This is just not for me. It’s not a quencher, it’s not a sipper. It’s a crapper. Ugh.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Slick (1971) - Thief River Falls, Minnesota, USA - JUN 23, 2003
Golden in color, small head that faded quite fast, the aroma was malty sweet with a definate hint of alcohol, with some mild hints of caramel and mild fruit tones as well.the taste was much the same as the aroma with a big alcohol punch.with the after taste being malty and mildly hopped, and then the alcohol kicks in again giving a very warm feeling going down.IMO this is definately not a brew that i care to have again.I definately know there are better brews out there in this style.Thankfully i have only one to try thanks to my Bro-In-Law
2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 Frank (1964) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - NOV 6, 2003
Scent is surprisingly mild but the taste is powerful and evil. Intense alcohol with a bit of spice and perfume. Imagine drinking Old Spice...
Still, I can't help but like it just a little. With each sip, I care less and less about things like flavor and palate and more about sucking down as much alcohol as possible.
