3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 boto (1549) - Granby, Connecticut, USA - JUL 14, 2002
Nice sipping beer. Almost like a congac. Very malty and sweet.
2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 Dorqui (1547) - Brescia, ITALY - NOV 21, 2004
Much fort, determined impact. The rich and full taste comes damaged from one imbalance with decidedly excessive the alcoholic rate.
2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 StefanSD (1541) - Lakeside, California, USA - DEC 30, 2007
11 oz bottle from Bevmo. Pours a slightly cloudy brass color. The head is small, white and recedes to 1/8 inch and holds. The aroma is light with Belgian spices and alcohol. The flavor is dominated by alcohol, there is a strong burn. Other flavors are caramel and cloves. This concoction is best sipped like a martini, big beer gulps just do not work. The mouthfeel is even and smooth. The finish short with alcohol. Overall: Very interesting, but not recommended, it gave me a headache.
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 NosirIwont (1537) - Aalborg Vestby, DENMARK - SEP 9, 2011
Bottle. Pours a clear golden with a diminishing off-white head. Bit of lacing. Sweet, fruity-grainy aroma. Notes of malt as it warms. Flavour is sweet, fruity, grainy and a bit spicy (a bit like cloves, but not quite). Touch of melon overtone. Finish is the same with lingering grainy notes. 25.08.11.
0.7 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 1/20 crazyvin (1535) - New York, USA - FEB 15, 2003
It looks and tastes like cheap scotch. alcohol was too powerful and overshadowed the aftertaste, if any
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 ALLOVATE (1534) - Butler, WA, AUSTRALIA - SEP 21, 2006
An attractive beer that’s ugly on the inside. From the ’nip’ bottle into a chalice at cellar temperature. Wonderfully charged, bright, tawny gold body capped off by a thick, rocky, bubbly off-white head that held and glued itself to the glass. Honey and lemon soaked grains in the aroma, note of alcohol spice, overall very subtle. Sweet, grainy and hot in the mouth. Fusel alcohols make this kick like a mule and add a solvent-like burn to the swallow. Gritty, honey soaked malts and artificial candi flavours flit softly in the mouth and a sugary sweetness joins the warming alcohol as it slips passed the tonsils. Not much length, thankfully. I think the alcohol cleans out the flavour. Feint note of cantaloupes dwells on the palate. A little oily in mouthfeel, quite soft in carbonation but otherwise the body is quite light. Aside from the heady alcohol there is not much to this one. Not unpleasant, just unnecessarily strong. Not my thing!!! (25cL, ’Extra Forte’ 13% ABV, 28/09/07. Int’l Beer Shop, W. Leederville)
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 otakuden (1490) - Vero Beach, USA - AUG 8, 2009
In mythology, Belzebuth is a demon or devil. A being of nefarious and diabolical origins, Belzebuth is not usually acknowledged as the Devil himself; just one of his more powerful minions. In France, Belzebuth has risen, taking the most ominous form of a strong golden ale and sporting an imposing 13% ABV. For most, that alone is more than enough to scare away those of a lesser constitution. I am not one of those of a lesser constitution; I am up to the challenge. Belzebuth in all his golden fiery glory does not frighten me. In fact, he has captured my attentions and desires as I leap into his embrace before and after looking.
Deep golden orange covered in a dirty hay haze while a small head features scattered bubbles and melting trails of off-white lace. As I aggravate his person, he fumes and foams, leaving a thick layer of white foam and releasing an aromatic assault of sinister proportions. Sweet, spiced, and hot with alcohol warmth, spiced candied apples, apricots, and cinnamon sticks are dipped in warm marmalade. As his fruity assault continues with orange skins and mango, he exits with dry wood, bark, and a wisp of cedar. Herbs perfume my breath with parsley, cilantro, and fresh mint leaves. Pervading his nose is sweetly spiced alcohol warmth. Descending into his fiery home, I drink deep of his chalice brimming with golden nectar. Lip-smacking delicious. He is sticky and sweet with honey, orange, apricot, and marmalade exuding warm spices, dry wood, and a lingering alcohol heat that hits in the back of his palate, warming my being. A few more quaffs deeper and his palate is a pleasant repeat of all the above while my breath continues to show a lingering herbal presence which tickles the back of my throat. Tasty. Licking my lips, wet and sticky with spiced cooked fruits, he finishes with comforting warmth. Maybe this Belzebuth guy really isn’t all that bad; he certainly has it made when it comes to a tasty Belgian-style Strong Ale. He may be 13% ABV, but at only 8.4ozs per bottle, I’m feeling up to another round.
Many are turned off by the fact that Belzebuth is only available in a 3pack at a fairly high price, considering price per quantity. Fear the price not and the beer even less; grab your Belzebuth next time he storms around the corner and lets loose a roar to catch your attention.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 porterhouse (1479) - Alna, Maine, USA - DEC 29, 2007
(8.4 oz bottle (stamped "28/09/07") from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/maine/topsham/b target=blank>Bootleggers) Butterschnapps!...Pours murky yellowish amber with just a little bit of off-white head. Aroma is hot and sweet, almost like alcoholic cherry syrup or Life Savers. Mouthfeel is kind of unbeerlike, sort of smooth but only small amount of carbonation, somewhat syrupy. Taste is hot but not overpowering. Tastes sort of like a butter rum Life Saver with booze. Not totally undrinkable, just sort of strange.
