April 2009, I wrote this: Been saving this beer for my 666th review on BA (how sad is that?). 25cl brown bottle with the 13% brew inside. Poured into my ’La Chouffe’ stemmed tulip glass. Clear, deep golden colour, like a German Export or Dort. Same white head too. Alcohol esters attack the nose along with a toffee/molasses/treacle semi-sweetness. Hops too, they arrive as the beer warms. Obviously you have to get past the alcohol first, then a richness and tangy sensation puts a tingle to the back of your throat. The semi-sweetness of the aroma comes out in the taste and there is a hidden warmth in the brew which reminded me of coal fires and smoking jackets. This is a bloody good beer, I am finding more and more French brews worth drinking, this being the second from this brewery.

Mittleres Bernstein, kaum Schaum. Ein strohiges Malzaroma ist vernehmbar. Im Geschmack auch malzig-süß, bevor der Alk. den Gaumen betäubt und alle anderen Geschmacksnuancen erschlägt. Schlecht!

Pours a medium carbed light amber with a boozy head. Aromas of caramel, toffee, slight hint of banana, little fig, and no alcohol. Flavors of toffee, caramel, and light alcohol coming through flavors and nose. Light to medium sweet and leaves a light grain/alcohol aftertaste. Alcohol dominates many of the malt flavors which takes away from the enjoyment.

Faint aromas of Belgian yeast and carbonated grains. Moderate shade of copper/brown. Taste is slightly weak roasted barley, sweet caramel and burnt sugar. Fair booze and molasses characteristics on the finish. Overall, the flavor is very weak and it’s a little overly sweet on the palate. I’d give this a C- rating.

A beer with too much alcohol taste. It is not balanced and, after some time it is hard to finish.

Medium carbonation. Very unbalanced beer. Sweet with a lots of alcohol, and alcohol is the only thing you taste. Very unpleasant.

Bottle, thanks to Leighton, at the 500 miles tasting in the Sham, 23/03/13. 13% ABV. Lightly hazed golden amber with a very thin white head that dissipates to light spotting. Nose is booze, sugar, toffee, banana, yeast esters. Taste comprises woody notes, Ronseal, booze, sweet sugars, caramel, did I mention booze? Full bodied, sweet and cloying. You know all those beers you compliment by saying ’The alcohol was well hidden/expertly disguised’ for ... insert "10/11/12/13% ABV". Well it bloody well isn’t in this sweet sugary mess!!! MEH!

Bottle at the 500 Miles Tasting, the Sham - one of my contributions. Pours clear, bright gold with a small, creamy white head. Smells like rubbing alcohol and turpentine. Medium sweet flavor, grain alcohol, caramel and glue. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Hot finish, sticky sugars, vodka, further harsh, raw alcohol. Very few redeeming characteristics here. Quite an atrocity.

250 ml bottle, poured into a tulip glass. Is quite cold out, so hopefully this alcoholic beast will warm me up a bit. Very deep orange colour on the body, copper like, head is just a thin line, less than a finger, with low retentionn and only some traces of lacing. Aroma is very faint after the initial pour, but once shaken around the glass for a while, it’s coming to the surface. Apples, caramel, some little hops on the background and of course a strong alcohol smell. Taste is somewhat sweet, quite malty. Fruity as well. Other than that, sugars and alcohol, but for the alcohol level in it, one can say that it is bearly notable. The alcohol warmth is here anyhow, and it’s working its magic. Nice medium thick body, not bad on the carbonation either, being on right levels. Dry enough on the palate. Overall this surpassed my expectations. I was expecting just a beer building its hype on the "evil" name in combination with the high ABV but I came across a more-than-decent brew.
