COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Nota Bene is the great ale from veteran craft brewer Ben Middlemiss. NB: it is also a latin phrase used to indicate that special attention should be paid to something. So, "note well", and you will be richly rewarded with a complexity of flavours and aromas. Brewer Ben says you may be forgiven for "...making a habit of drinking this Belgian-style Abbey ale." A beautifully crafted, complex-charactered ale, Nota Bene weighs in at 8.7% ABV and has an almost orange hue.  The flavours are warm and dry and driven by a spicy hop fruit character, laced with an unobtrusive warming alcohol effect.  When poured, a lovely rich head forms and contains delicious yeast characters only found normally in the style of beers produced by the monasteries of Belgium.  It was indeed these monks’ work which inspired Ben to develop this wonderfully enduring world class ale.

hazy brown amber. Dried apricot, chocolates touch of brandy and yeasty nose. Slightly sour, funky dried apricots, bubblegum and chocolate. A bit all over the place, but very idosyncratic. Tart yeasty finish. Interesting

Bottle at Dispensary Enoteca. Nice strong ale, with interesting sour notes. Aromas of apple and grain. Taste is sweet and sour, with long length. Palate is velvety, and full bodied. Brown, with no head.

Have you every been exposed to a work of art and while you can appreciate the amount of work that went into it, the final result just kind of leaves you cold. I think that’s what we have here. Lots of smooth, rich heavy flavors and aromas - maple, oak, molasses, honey, fig, that sort of thing - are in here. It just seems, I don’t know, uninspiring. It’s not you Ben Middlemiss Nota Bene, it’s me. Bottled in 2010, drank in Feb 2012.

Beautifully malty with an impressive hop bite. Dark amber color, nice white head that’s not real thick but the lace hangs around for awhile. I just really like the hop forward profile of this abbey ale.

33 cl. Rusty coffee body with a lasting film of creamy head. Nose is chocolate caramel, spicy prune, orange, red wine. Flavor is orange, chocolate, earthy green herb, clove-spiced pear, tart berry. Also some hints of iodine and fresh cut wood. Medium body is sweetish but has a dry finish; and is slightly watery with medium carbonation.

Terrible! This beer was so bad I couldn’t even drink it. And I’ve previously finished VB, emu export and other highly offensive beers. Hugely disappionting, steer well clear of this.

Bottle, 12C. Amber with an off-white head that fades to a coat but laces nicely. Aroma of oranges, grapes, coriander seed, cloves, leather. Slightly syrupy mouthfeel. Taste is initially sweet, then dries out. Layers of dried fruit, mellow and sourish oranges, medium sugars, tight spices. Brooding and interesting - the orange flavours alone are pretty complex - but for me wants for a little frivolity.
