UPDATED: MAR 5, 2016 Typical Weizen brewed by Licher for Klosterbrauerei Ettal. Tasted young years ago, now from a somewhat older bottle for re-rating. Looks fantastic in a Hefeweizen ’vase’: vanilla ice cream-like, rocky, foamy, thick, dense head on top of a deep, warm orange blonde beer with ochre hue, a tad darker than usual for the style, equally misty with whole ’columns’ of fizz piercing through - a stunning sight, as it should be for this style. Aroma yields a lot of the expected ’mashed banana’ and cloves, the hallmarks of a Hefeweizen bouquet, with the banana slightly dominating; other impressions include (obviously) strong soapy wheat, ripe peach, some subtle candied lemon, chamomille, apple cake, gingerbread, some ’natural’ iron, dry earth and some vague, onsetting oxidation, but not (yet) disturbing at all. Soft fruity onset, banana, red apple, peach and some gooseberry, sweetish with sourish undercurrent which becomes more pronounced as the palate progresses and the soapy, softly sourish wheatiness develops, well balanced with a bready, very lightly caramelly barley malt sweetness; carbonation is spritzy but not coarse, mouthfeel is supple and smooth. Retronasal clove-like phenols, banana ester and very mild oxidation show up in the end along with a very subtle whiff of soft, floral hops, which provide some background structure in the finish, though they remain almost completely hidden and it is the wheat soapiness and barley ’breadiness’ that go down into the throat, with that soft, subtle sourish accent providing some drought against these sweetish, juicy grains. I love a good Hefeweizen every now and then, I love their looks, and I love how refreshing and juicy they can be when they are well made; this one delivers. Stereotypical alright, but so are many German beers, and then it comes down to finesse, detail and craft to distinguish between the above average ones and the below average ones in each style. This, to me at least, is slightly above average.

I have been waiting to try this one for a long time but in the end it turned out to be nothing extraordinary. It is not bad, the colour is nice and also aroma is fine. But it is lacking that distinctive wheat beer taste. Wheat beer lovers will not hate it but it will probably not become your favourite.

Bottle. Pours a hazy golden body with a large cloudy white head. Nose is mild banana, clove, grains, caramel and hints of straw and bread crust. Taste is banana, clove, grainy caramel tones and hints of biscuits, straw and nuts. Medium body, high carbonation. Very pleasant weizen with a nice nutty touch, rather drinkable. Me like.

Gut!
