Lubiere (9752) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 7, 2008
UPDATED: MAY 17, 2012 A golden amber ale with a thick off white head. Wonderful resinous hops, floral, with citrus points. In mouth, a crisp hoppy ale with resinous hops, a bit of menthol, alcohol. Very nice. Tasted at Mondiale 2008, June 1 2008. 8-4-8-4-15

Anniversaire 2012: A hazed orange amber with a thin off white head. In aroma, a must sweet vinous malt with incense, orange pulp, a bit of sweat. In mouth, a pungent ale with dry crisp biscuit malt, roasted notes, piney and grassy, intense and bitter finale. 8-3-7-3-13.

Sammy (8359) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - AUG 24, 2007
Enjoyed at the brewpub. Very hoppy, strong bitterness, lots of lace, sweetish finish with caramel. A nicely done double IPA, and the best one of the lineu, which is served with good lower carbonation and only slightly cold. Hoppy aroma. A higher ABV apparently than their previous batches. Could be over 100 IBU.

2011 version. Pale golden pour. Fresh zesty hop nose. Fresh orange peel, grapefruit and pine. Sticky and resinous with a light pale malt aroma on the back along with some stone fruit flavour. Fairly tropical but it has a soft palate. Sticky hop resin helps cut some of the sweetness. The hops are intense but the bitterness is restrained. Delicious.

UPDATED: APR 26, 2009 My Bottom Line:
A complex malty sweetness undulates from caramel to maple sap to freshly-crushed cereals as whirling leafy, citrusy and sandy hops (Simcoe) twist and wind their way across the palate. This fine Double IPA excellently celebrates their anniversaries as a brewpub.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam surfs the hazy amber blond.
-In the first batch, the maltiness was truly luscious, but the second time around it let a little more room for the hops to express themselves.
-The carbonation lets this wise sweetness and hoppiness express itself.
-The wooden, earthy hop bitterness is oily and lengthy, and is able to dry out most of the flowing maltiness.
-Alcohol is ably concealed.
-The 2008 Anniversary batch is much more of a Double IPA than the 2007 batch, which was a maltier American Strong Ale. Both incarnations are delicious. The 2009 batch is translucent and possesses a much more fruity hop perfume than the previous 2 versions. Cleaner throughout and perhaps more drinkable. This is very good every year!

On tap at the brewpub.

2008-05-31. As Anniversaire 2008. Dark orange amber body with a creamy beige head. Sweet yeasty aroma, light, sweet orange citrus hops, something odd I can’t place. (7+) Similar sweet orange hops in the flavour, light touch of alcohol, moderate bitterness throughout, very mild resin notes in the finish. (7+) Less assertively hoppy than I would have expected. Smooth average plus palate. (3+). On tap, Mondial, Montreal, 4T

On tap at brewpub.
Light haze, amber gold. Smallish dense, creamy head.
Grassy hops, citric notes. Alcohol well blended into potent hoppy aroma.
Full bodied, good rich malty base. Sweet ale but sugars well in check, green slightly citric in chatter hops. Long lasting blend till very finish.

Draught. Mondiale 2009 - day 2 - at Benelux brewpub. Hazy deep amber with a large creamy-fluffy off-white head. Dry, pungent grapefruit pith and cat pee (in the good way) aroma - a solid citrus/citrus zest zing underpinning it, just enough light grain to provide some balance. The taste follows, just as solidly hoppy as the nose promised, but with more malt character, better balance in the flavour than in the aroma - super, actually, I toyed with going 9/10 on this one. Quite a thick body to it, with acidity from the hops and a sticky malt mouthfeel - pretty long-finishing too, and it didn’t taste close to 9% - lovely: thick and catty, I could drink it for days.

blankboy (5950) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - AUG 5, 2009
Draught at Benelux, Montréal, QC. 2009 version. Pours a clear deep ruby with an average size off-white head. Aroma’s quite malty -- lots of caramel malt -- along with some buttery toffee, fruit, resiny hops and some alcohol. Flavour of caramel malt, resiny hops, some alcohol and fruit and a bitter finish. Medium bodied. I expected to be blown away by a IIPA from Benelux but I wasn’t, but this is still a solid beer and I liked it.

(batch served on first anniversary. I was told part of the batch will be aged for second anniversary) Slightly cloudy golden body topped by a long-lasting medium beige head leaving good lacings. I can’t say this beer lacks malt, hops or anything. That’s an all-dressed beer. Tons of very sweet malts generous hopping, doughy yeast. Light fruity notes. Buried in there were some woody (oaky?) flavour. The hops flavour is somewhere between pine-tree and citrusy. Despite the unusually high sweetness level the hops still managed to provide a decent bitterness. Residual sweetness in the finish. Felt like some kind of brown-sugarised IIPA. Alcohol is extremely well-hidden. Can’t say I’m crazy about it but it’s not boring that’s for sure. Will probably develop more complex flavours once the beer processes more of its sugars. See you next year crazy beer, it’s a date. Let’s just hope it won’t be my only date until then…
