Deep brown pour with a tight off-white head. The aroma is great - clean toasted aroma. Notes of cocoa and earthy hops. A touch of very light roastiness but a fairly assertive hoppiness. Earthy and woody with a little bit of lingering minerally character. Lightly hoppy.

On tap at the brewpub. Dark chestnut color with a thin foamy off-white head. Average retention. Aroma is roasted hazelnuts, toasted malt, hops and a hint of wood. Flavor is toasted malt, hazelnuts, roasted malt and brown sugar with agressive hopping for a brown ale. Bitter finish.

[on tap at brewpub] Weak aroma of toasty malt and pine. Almost clear, ruddy chestnut appearance with an off-white ring. Sweet, chocolate and toasty malt overshadowed by potent, bitter pine hops, which throw this brew off balance. Light to medium body, moderate carbonation, lingering bitter grapefruit finish.

On tap at the brewpub. This was the surprise of the night. A lively brown/amber pour with tons of body and a moderate creamy head. Big nose of soft citrus, mild yeast, and huge grassy hops. Much like an India Brown Ale with some "exotic" additions. Mouthfeel was abundant and quite wonderful, a really complex and drinkable treat that we revisited with enthusiasm.

Draught. Mondiale 2009 - day 3. Clear mahogany with a decent foamy tan head. Dry toffee aroma, a hint of butter, and dry herbal bitterness (7-). The taste was solid - roast caramel and strong dry grassy bitterness. Average body, a little astringent/dry, weakly carbonated - but nice, quite different for a brown, and thankfully no "cola syrup" character.
