3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 asheft (2072) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - NOV 26, 2009
[on tap at brewpub]
Potent caramel aroma that is slightly sherry-like with some nuts. Slightly foggy bronze with a white ring and wisps. Peat smoke flavour imbues a nice, sweet caramel and toffee malt. Medium bitterness is a good contrast to the sweet malt. Crisp feel and pretty clean finish except for a touch of peat smoke. Light to medium body, medium carbonation.

Hazy dark brown hue, with a small beige head, sweet toasted malt nose, with a raisiny, wildberry note, with a faint bitter chocolate accent, with a subtle liquorice aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a yeasty, sweet toasted malt, cookie dough character, with a nice raisiny, date fruity accent, with hint of nuttiness, a mild flowery hop note leading towards a good malty, fruity, hop bitterness finish.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Glouglouburp (4773) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - OCT 10, 2007
In short: Well malted and fulfilling Scottish Ale. Solid.
How: Pint at brewpub, fresh batch
The look: Dark-ruby body with a small but long-lasting beige head
In long: A ton of caramelized malts in this baby. Taste is sweet thick caramel with some liquorice and distant red fruits (kind of cranberries?…). Rather sweet beer with presence of residual sugar although it could be because it was a very fresh batch. Leafy and slightly fruity hops add a desired dryness and I would I liked a bit more of those. Comfortable carbonation. Straight to the point and effective malt galore. Very filling and sweet, maybe even too much so to be considered a session beer. I drank myself a few of those and let me tell you that they were the most hard-hitting Chiefs since the Hansen brothers of Slap Shot.
