Winter warmer 2012. Superbe bière limpide, couleur de noisette où flotte un fin col crème laissant une délicate dentelle au verre. Des arômes bien dosés de cacao, de noix rôties et de résine. Bien amère avec une trace de sucre. De corps très solide, elle est veloutée, à l’effervescence douce. Elle se termine sur une fin sèche, mais longuement aromatique.

À l’hivernale des brasseurs de Montréal: Caramel brûlé, vanille dans un corps riche. Belle complexité, belle présence en bouche.

(Un verre de 10 oz à Montréal le 23 février dernier) Un liquide à la robe brune acajou. Un petit col mousseux. Un nez de réglisse et de bonbons belges avec une fumée latente et des parfums boisés. Un goût malté à souhait avec des saveurs franches de réglisse et des fruits qui ont peine à s’affirmer. Un alcool qui ne fait pas son âge. Une présence des houblons qui coupent l’abondance des céréales maltées. Une fumée qui frôle la surface de mes papilles. Un corps bien portant qui est sauvé par un pétillement vivifiant. Une texture riche et agréable. Une finale davantage maltée qu’amère avec de belles notes chaudement posées.

Had this in a bottle with Tico the brewer. It is also available now in small bottles, as I saw it at Rahman. It was brewed as the Official beer of the 2011 Fête Bières & Saveurs de Chambly, which I did not attend this year. This is a big beer and a sipper. A thick mouthfeel and lots of malts, like a regular American brown on steroids. Brown colour with good retained head, malty aroma. I could not drink so much of 500 ml. so shared it with a BA from Boston.

On tap. Beautiful ruby-brown pour with whitish head. Aroma is laden with all kinds of sweets: toffee, caramel and barley sugar. English hops are present but slightly eclipsed by the malty aromas. Taste is sweet, moderately bitter finish, some herbal notes are present. Palate is heavy but drinkable, the alcohol is hidden. Good stuff.

In short: Tasty sweet candies and wooden hops. A fine big beer.

The look: Clear ruby body topped by a medium beige head
In long: Big rich nose with lots of barley candy, red liquorice candy, wooden hops. Taste is an orgy of sweet toasted malts, hard candies, burnt sugars, caramel, a light spicy sensation (like jelly beans), resinous wooden hops. Plenty of residual sugars but enough hops to balance it out. A very enjoyable big beer. This beer is another reason why I love so much going to the my local brewpubs, I start most of my Saturdays thinking “I need to go to a brewpub, that Sunday’s hangover is not going appear by itself”.

En fût. Verre de 12 oz dégusté directement à la brasserie. Arôme: Odeur de caramel et d’épices avec une pointe d’alcool. Apparence: La couleur est bourgogne avec une faible densité de bulle. Présence d’un mince col mousseux et d’une fine dentelle sur le verre. Saveur: Goût de caramel fruité avec une pointe d’épices et d’alcool. Durée moyenne de l’arrière goût. Palette: Le corps est moyen avec une texture vineuse. Moyenne effervescence en bouche. Légère présence d’alcool en arrière goût. (Rating #3975)

From tap at the brewpub. Pours clear and golden deep amber to hazlenut brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is roasted malty, dense toffee caramelish. Bitter, sweet malty, roasted and alcohol presence. Smooth dark malty and semi sweet yet also bitter finish.

[on tap at brewpub] Pumpernickel grain aroma with a touch of pine and grapefruit hops. Clear garnet under an off-white patch and ring. Cereal grain, pumpernickely flavour that is balanced by medium hops bitterness. Pine hops in the background, along with a little lemon and walnut. Balance is towards malt sweetness, but the significant bitterness does provide some balance. Full body, moderate carbonation, slightly lingering bitter finish.
