Official beer of the 2011 Fête Bières & Saveurs de Chambly. It is a Imperial Brown Ale style composed of 10 malts, 10 hops and at 10% alcohol. A strong, festive and intense beer.

Drank at Bières & Saveurs de Chambly 2011, on September 4. Burnt burgundy, thin head. Intense malt aroma, very raw, with hints of hazelnuts slightly sweet. Taste of chocolate and caramel sweetness and alcohol, with notes of sweet but hop scotch, good bitterness with little sensation of alcohol. In my opinion, the best of the Complice!

My Bottom Line :
Caramel, chestnuts, berry pie and subtle smoke elegantly intertwine in this...uh... Smoked Brown Barley Wine. Yeah, that’s it.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-A beige cappuccino-like head of foam decorates the mahogany-tinged dark brown.
-The silky roundness is smooth and lascivious. Another glass and scores might have gone sky high... and I might have been floored too.
-The nose was as developed as the flavor profile yet; a year from now, this might be simply heavenly.
-Hop resins balance out the residual sugars in the finish.
-This is not one of those gimmicky kitchen sink strong brews to wow neophytes looking for intensity. It is obviously a well thought recipe which was expertly carried out. One of their most memorable creations.
-If they don’t make this again, I’m going to throw a hissy fit.

On tap at the brewpub.

(Rating #3975)

On tap. Beautiful ruby-brown pour with whitish head. Aroma is laden with all kinds of sweets: toffee, caramel and barley sugar. English hops are present but slightly eclipsed by the malty aromas. Taste is sweet, moderately bitter finish, some herbal notes are present. Palate is heavy but drinkable, the alcohol is hidden. Good stuff.

(8 janvier 2013)

Sample at Chambly fest.
Appearance : Clear amber with nice foamy brown head.
Aroma : Nice sugary sweetness with great brown sugar. Nice hops too.
Taste : Light alcohol with light spices. Brown sugar with nice caramel. Finish is quite spicy with caramel. Nice resinous notes, quite bitter.
Overall : Quite interesting. Definitely a big beer with lots of stuff going on. Great overcooked caramel notes. Nice hops too. Nice finish. I hope to see this in bottles so I can give it a more extensive review.

In short: Tasty sweet candies and wooden hops. A fine big beer.
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Clear ruby body topped by a medium beige head
In long: Big rich nose with lots of barley candy, red liquorice candy, wooden hops. Taste is an orgy of sweet toasted malts, hard candies, burnt sugars, caramel, a light spicy sensation (like jelly beans), resinous wooden hops. Plenty of residual sugars but enough hops to balance it out. A very enjoyable big beer. This beer is another reason why I love so much going to the my local brewpubs, I start most of my Saturdays thinking “I need to go to a brewpub, that Sunday’s hangover is not going appear by itself”.
