A hazed turbid amber ale with no head. In aroma, superb sour cherries, Epsom salts, acidity, fruity and complex, like an oud bruin. In mouth, a smooth sweet acidity with cherry notes, smooth light buttery notes, horseblanket. Bottle at Mondiale 2012, June 8 2012.

(Rating #4258)

Cloudy amber with a thin caramel head. Wood and with rich Flemish-style maltiness and appley fruitiness. Sweetish and lightly fruity. The malts aren’t as developed as the nose indicates, but this a rare example of a New World sour beer that would be recognizable to a Belgian.

Draft at the Mondial. Hazy red. Small tan head. Big aroma with fun woody bugs and Flemish red character. Deep sherry wood barrel. Just the right amount of malt sweetness in the middle, finishing dry and delicious. Fabulous. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

In short: A very oaky, moderately funky and fruity amber sour ale. Nice
How: Bottle at brewpub
The look: Cloudy dark amber topped by a very small off-white head
In long: Nose is moderately funky with a leathery/bretty character and also plenty of oak and fruitiness. Taste has sour cherries, plenty of oak, lactic acid, light notes of acetic acid, caramelized malts, various berries-like red fruits. Sourness level is medium. Carbonation is on the soft side. Basically this is a competent sour ale similar to many examples that have been brewed south of our border for many years. Quebec/Canada is a few years behind on the sour ale trend but with Flamèche Benelux is helping to close this gap. Ratings seem to be all over the place for this beer, and some newer ratebeerians have given it a pretty shitty score, but I’ve learned to never put down people with a lower number of ratings, because they are the ones who have a life and also having sex.

Rastacouere (6107) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - APR 2, 2012
Almost headless amber pour from a bottle at the pub. Straightforwardly fruity nose immediately reminds of acidic cranberry juice, with other berry and blood orange nuances. Fairly acetic and citric, it has a solid tart bite and a good dose of astringency. Light-bodied and not too agressive with the acidity to lose its drinkability, it remains a rather approachable sour ale, easy to drink and not too deep, with minimal wild yeast notes or wood. It rather focuses on fruit and acidity. Not very complex, but refreshing and fun and certainly a different offer from what we usually see both at benelux and in the rest of Quebec.

My Bottom Line:
This Sour Ale’s multifaceted fruitiness evokes white grapes, sour cherries and cranberries before an elegant, tart finish takes hold of the palate.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the misty pale red.
-The soft, natural carbonation does wonders for drinkability.
-This may not be the most complex Flemish Red/Sour Ale creation out there, but it certainly is one of the most agreeable.
-The bottle-conditioned mouthfeel is impeccable.

Bottle.

[bollte] Complex aroma of sour strawberries, faint pickle juice, horseblanket, extremely aromatic fresh fruit. Clear ruddy brown under a thin, white cover that laces the glass. Moderate sourness up front with tingly sweetness on the tongue and transcendent sour strawberries, cherries, and an interesting grapefruit finish. Not quite mouth puckering like other sours, but full of flavour and refreshing. Light body, medium carbonaion.
