3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Lubiere (6979) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 12, 2009
A deep dark porter with a nice burgundy hue and a thin moke head. In aroma, fresh mash, light sweet chocolate and nutty notes. In mouth, a nice roasted malts, with light cold coffee, some nice English hops. Well balanced. Medium bodied, light for the style. On tap at brewpub, March 27 2009.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Glouglouburp (4773) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - APR 30, 2009
In short: An extra-soft porter with no special character. Well made but too soft and a bit boring.
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Clear dark burgundy topped by a small tan head
In long: Some baked dark fruits, very soft caramel, a little red liquorice candy and black liquorice candy, a little chocolate hint, medium roastiness level, medium sweetness level. A light astringency. No hops presence to speak of. Medium body, medium carbonation. I don’t mind a soft session beer but this one was just too bland. The flavour elements are there but the beer feels just too soft. Anyway, when I see a below 6% Baltic porter I become as suspicious as when someone on the street in NYC offers to sell me a $20 genuine Rolex.
