Brewed to a smooth, chocolatey, semi-roasted ale that bridges the islands of porter and stout. And if you aren’t a fan of bridges, there’s always the canoe.

Pours a deep black with no real head, though that head would be beige. Toasty roasty burnt aroma with some coffee and a bit of caramel. Taste is surprisingly citrusy. Toast and coffee flavors dominate the mid game with just a touch of sweetness. Kind of watery, though you could call it juicy thanks to the citrus notes. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tap at the brewery. Black, lacing head. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee. Very heavy, dark roast in thee flavor, burnt grain and coffee. Palate is on the thick side. I am not sure what i think of this very heavy roast that makes the beer bitter.

12 ounce can courtesy of TheHOFF! Clear dark brown, large creamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of nuts, grain, roast, chocolate, earthy hops. The taste is chocolate, roasted malt, caramel. Medium bodied, strong lingering bitterness. Nice.

Sampled from the tap at the St. Paul Summer Beer Fest. Pours black with a dark brown head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has a nice roasted malt note with some chalky dark grains and a bit of coffee. Flavor has more sweet chocolate but still mainly bitter dark grains, roasted malts and a touch of coffee.

I just saw the can and thought it would be a type of black IPA--dark but not stout-like. Ooops, I was wrong. Smooth and moderately rich, with a prominent roasted flavor and long chocolate finish. Good stuff. Can.

Jet black, creamy tan head. Smells of roasted malt, light chocolate. Creamy and smooth with just a light bitterness. This is very good stout. The can says it’s a bridge between porter and stout but to me it’s a real tasty stout. The wife liked it too I will be picking up more of this.

Can. Pours black with big mocha colored head and lacing. Nose is roast and some chocolate. Chocolate comes through more in the taste. Lasting bitterness in the aftertaste.

Can at home, after a quick day trip to Portland that broke my HOTD streak and left Luke stranded while I unsuccessfully tried to escape from the clutches of OMSI and old friends of friends. That has absolutely no bearing on this beer, and is completely irrelevant, except that this is the first beer I opened after a trip to Portland where the only beer I had was an ESB with lunch. Expectations are unrealistically high for whatever beer fills the void. Anyway, speaking of voids, this black ale pours dark, opaque, near black, with lovely foamy tan head. Aroma of bittersweet chocolate, grains, nescafe, biscuit and caramel. Taste: pleasant roast and milk chocolate; cola; moderately sweet with a light roast, minimally bitter finish. Light body, average carbonation, texture is slick and a bit thin. Overall: this is a very pleasant, satisfying simple sweet stout.

jet black, thin cream head, spotty large bubbled ring. Toasty nose, light oak and coconut, light olive. Richer flavor, anise hints early with chocolate, thick and creamy with tons of balance through rich, full end. Tons of foreign stout qualities, ultra dry.
