Draft sample. Poured a black color with a medium off-white creamy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Medium toasted chocolate malt aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy roasted sweet malt flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of average duration. Solid drinkable brew.

Date: July 26, 2011 Mode: Draft Source: Bent River Brewpub, Moline, IL Appearance: Opaque dark brown with almost no head, good lacing. Aroma: Roasted oatmeal or granola. Flavor: Consistent with aroma, thin to medium bodied and slightly carbonated. Other: Not too exciting, the Uncommon Stout is much better.

On tap at brewery, pours a very dark brown with a thin tan head, aroma is full of chocolate with sweet malt and a touch of smoke, the flavor is full flavored with chocolate and a smokey finish, not bad.

This beer was really good, a grand Stout, but trust me, Bent River has another Stout that tops this one!

Bomber thanks to Merkin666. Pours a nearly black, ruby brown with a 2 finger, creamy, beige head that fades to a thick skim after a couple of minutes. Aroma is roast, slightly over toasted granola, puffed wheat cereal, caramelized corn syrup (like in caramel corn), light chocolate, toast, and caramel. Flavor is roast, chocolate, burnt sugar, a little char, hints of oatmeal, more puffed wheat cereal (odd, but tasty in this case), caramel and a touch of crusty, yeasty bread here and there. Palate is medium bodied, creamy on entry, becoming a little dry toward the middle and dry to the finish, and a moderate, slightly sharp carbonation. Really good stuff, could use a little extra lasting heft to the body and a slightly less sharp carbonation, but itís still a really nice stout.

20100608 Tap at brewpub. Pretty standard brewpub oatmeal stout that is okay but very plain. Some pleasantly dry burnt caramel notes. This one could definitely deal with a light sweetness, but overall itís quite dry.

On tap at brewpub
Moving on to the more appealing entries on the menu this third taster was actually quite good. Unlike the lighter ales which seemed unfocused and experimental this had a purpose. Knocking down a pint of this would be pleasurable and probably complement most of the entries on the standard brewpub menu well.

Aroma / Appearance - Deep inky black the fluid body had an oily presence. It did not betray a heavy alcoholic base nor should it have for a sessionable sweet stout. Oatmeal, raspberries, and little traces of black coffee.

Flavor / Palate - Sweet and fluid the mouthfeel is a trace watery. Heavily flavored oatmeal filled with fresh raspberries and accompanied by rare sips of black coffee make a solid impression on the palate. This is par for the course for the style. If I were to make a benchmark this would not be far from the mark.

Betn River has some of the best beers I have had. I may be partial because I used to live in the Quad Cities and Bent River was THE QC brewery. This a very well balanced, roasty stout with coffee hints. When I am not in the mood for the uncommon, I have the outmeal instead. I had a keg of this beer and the IPA driven down for my wedding in Florida. Definately a huge hit at the reception. BR always puts a lot of effort into the appearance of their beers as well as balance and flavor.
