3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Brigadier (2240) - Bloomington, Indiana, USA - MAY 24, 2013
On tap
A well balanced stout, this release was my first evidence there is more to the UK market than just milds and bitters. Something that would be a fine daily drinker this beer is worth checking out if you are on a holiday and want to tick something that doesn’t make it abroad.
Aroma / Appearance - The oily black base has a greasy feel to it like a pint of motor oil diluted to half strength. Smoky coffee and the smell of last night’s campfire hang in the air for effect.
Flavor / Palate - Dry licorice, malt, and smoke carry into a velvety transition. The mouthfeel is a bit like a watery version of hard licorice candies. A nice finish lingers for a while without overstaying its welcome. This is a good enough stout for 4.7% ABV that I’d order another if I ran out of things to try.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 jmgreenuk (1288) - The Hague, NETHERLANDS - FEB 20, 2013
Bottle from Stirchley Wines and Spirits, Birmingham. Poured a dark mahogany with a frothy tan head. The aroma is malty and unsurprisingly a little smokey. The flavour is rich bitter, with liqourice, malt and spice. It’s best served warm. Coming straight out of the fridge does it no favours.
3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 DandyLion (225) - Leicester, Leicestershire, ENGLAND - JAN 18, 2013
Cask @ the pub, Leicester. Well it's a stout. An easy drinking REAL STOUT. You can taste the malt and it has coffee and roasted malt taste, with a bitter coffee aftertaste.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Theydon_Bois (2957) - The ’Sham, Surrey, ENGLAND - OCT 14, 2012
Bottle at JF’s - 12/10/12.
Pours mid black with a decent coffee head.
Roast malt nose, touch of coffee, hint of chocolate, a little pasticy.
Great roasted malt taste, milk chocolate and coffee in support, spice and a touch of smoke.
Medium bodied with soft carbonation leading to a smooth, creamy, smoked finish.
Really enjoyed this one after a succession of blander pales and bitters prior to it!
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 kermis (2492) - The Hague, NETHERLANDS - APR 19, 2012
Cask at Walsall beer festival. Dark brown pour with a tan head. Roasted aroma with strong coffee and chocolate. Same aspects in flavor with a bitter finish.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 BlackHaddock (2365) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 18, 2012
June 2010: A pint taken at ’The Plough’ in Worcester, very close to the cathedral.
The beer is very dark, with next to no head, just a tan coloured collar surrounding the inside of the glass.
Smokey malts, peat bogs, earthy smoke feel to the smell.
The taste was coffee, dark chocolate and smoked hams. I thought the body a bit thin for the flavours and on the sweet side of dry.
Different and OK.

cask at the Walsall beer festival 2012.
Almost no head. Clear deep ruby pour. Very nice!
3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Pudding (118) - Birmingham, Bedfordshire, ENGLAND - NOV 17, 2011
UPDATED: FEB 13, 2012 Impressive stout. 500ml bottle from Stirchley Wines, Birmingham.
Intense flavour, almost burnt back of mouth.
Retried (bottle) Feb 2012: Little aroma. Smokey taste remains. Not as powerful a taste as previous sample. Goes to prove that there are batch differences with bottle conditioned ales. (Score 14, previous tasting 18).
Still good.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Ethereal (2399) - Los Angeles, California, USA - AUG 27, 2011
Cask at Battersea Beer Festival, 9th Feb 2011. Very dark brown, small tan head. Lots of great strong roasty notes as it warms. Palate is smooth and quite light. Really nice stout, especially if you prefer the roasted/smoky style.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Gary (1132) - Rochester, Kent, ENGLAND - AUG 14, 2011
(Bottled)Tick every box for a low booze session stout with this, not that they’re often interesting at this ABV , but it Looks like text book stout ; nose is there in faint roast -=textures in the mouth are smooth and yet bitterly roasted and biting , milk chocolate creaminess is suave . Lots of pleasant upbeat stoutie vibes herrree.
