A fitting tribute to Finn, a character famed for his hospitality brought to life in the story of Beowulf. Our porter is as it should be: inviting, dark, and smoky, hoppy and not too sweet. The kind of ale that invites one to linger.

Bottle at home, from Tamworth BF via SP I think, 21/01/13. Very dark mahogony brown approaching black with a thin tan head that soon collapses to a puddle. Nose is dark lightly roasted malt, molasses, light chocolate, some jammy fruits in the background. Taste follows, light paper/cardboard, touch of dark fruits, some chocolate. Medium bodied but on the thin side, moderate carbonation, slightly dry finish. Drinkable, started off not being into this and had it at a distinctly average 3 but it grew on me a little.

Bottle 5.2% - Pours black with no head. Bitter roasted malt aroma. Unfortunately it has a light carbonation. Full flavoured and very bitter with loads of roasted malts.

Bottle from Stirchley Wines and Spirits, Birmingham. Poured a dark mahogany colour with a frothy tan head and some broken lace. The aroma is peaty and smoky, leading to a medium bitter flavour with lots of liqourice and dark chocolate. There is a little dry spice on the palate too. A superb porter I have to say!

500ml (Bottle conditioned): best before the end of Oct 2012, poured into my Abbot Ale glass tankard on 11 Aug 2012 during an IPA and Porter evening. Jet black with a full, deep tan coloured foaming head. Burnt malts everywhere in my bottle: so powerful hardly anything else was detectable. As the beer warmed is allowed some vanilla notes to express themselves but otherwise it was a ’peat bog’ of a beer (which I quite liked).

Bottle at Bruce’s Housewarming Party Tasting, London. Pours clear brown with a tight, beige foam head. Dusty, dry cocoa aroma with some dirt and faint dates. Light sweet flavor with dry cocoa, faint minerals, moderate roast, faint rubber. Light bodied with average, creamy carbonation. Dry finish with burnt toast, dusty baking cocoa, light sweetness. OK. Not very exciting, but OK.

Bottle at Bruce’s Housewarming Tasting. It pours deep brown, with a thin beige head. The nose is dark fruit, roasted malt, prune, date, sugar, grape and vinous notes. The taste is caramel, cola, roasted malt, charcoal, cardboard and some balsamic vinegar. Medium body and low carbonation. Not bad.
