3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 DruncanVeasey (5138) - NUNEATON, Blue Square Prem, - MAR 29, 2009
UPDATED: APR 13, 2009 (Bottle conditioned, 5.2%) Classic oily pitch looks collared filthily with beige, thick tufted lace all the way down. Tarry burnt snout balanced with milk chocolate, blackberry, apple and solvent. Rasping and charred with the customary full-on burnt toast, espresso, 70% cocoa and bittering hop attack. Red apple and bramble chipping in, but mostly cinders, Lindt Excellence and clinging smoke. More fruit and light-swallowing density than the cask version. Beautiful, uncompromising beer. (Original cask rate, 747314) Gravity, Coventry 09. Red-tinged pitch with a tan collar collapsing to a slick. Overwhelming steak and kidney pie aroma...or it might just be the bloke sat next to me. Powdery cocoa, roasted barley, musty hop and bramble. Raisiny dark high cocoa solids, espresso, hedgerow tang. Big bittering hop punishment finish with cold black coffee. Charcoal and burnt toast linger. Easy to see why it was announced West Mids Porter of The Year minutes before. Up to their usual dark roasty standard, if not as intense and lip-smacking as the Dragon Smoke Stout.
