COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dortmunder is still famous as a brewing center, but its namesake beer is something of a rarity these days. The great beer writer Michael Jackson described the style as halfway between the austere crispness of a German pils and the lush maltiness of a Munich helles—in other words, a perfectly balanced all-malt beer. Starting with a base of U.S. 2-row pilsner malt, we add just enough lightly-kilned Vienna and Munich malts to add a slight caramel character. Hops are New World versions of European classics, smooth and clean, but with some real personality as well.

I admit to liking it just a little more because I’m having it on draft at The Berghoff. Clean lager color, a thin foam ring around the edge. Light malt smell with a bit of pils character to it. Clean crisp "Special Export" taste that shows a hard water profile and puts German hops on the sides of my tongue. Hop bitterness builds with each sip. Now a much improved and very distinctive all-malt flagship beer.

Bottle. Poured clear light golden color with an average frothy white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate bread yeast and malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth dry texture and soft carbonation. Medium sweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Average for style beer.

Twelve ounce bottle from a Berghoff variety pack. Crystal clear golden pour with minimal lacing and a very thin white head. Aroma of sweet malty grains and a touch of alcohol. Flavor is fairly sweet up front with a decent amount of hop bitterness in the finish. Crisp and clean drinker.

Bottle. Very slightly hazy light gold pour with a small head. Grassy, some cracker. Slightly dry. Meh.

There are no other Dortwunder or Dortwonders in the database. Congratulations to Berghoff for being the first to come up w/ this ridiculous name! And the icing on the cake is this beer is not abjectly terrible. Truly the first day this was brewed will be forever remembered in the anals of Point Brewing history. It’s a clear orange yellow w/ a long-lasting head of fine white bubbles. The nose is floury malts along w/ some floral, grassy and lemon tones from the hops. This has a bit of a sweet honey-like character but it is at least firmly bitter to balance. A very slight metallic off note around the edges in the finish is my biggest complaint. Overall, this is a medium bodied, highly-carbonated brew that is nice and drinkable w/ a little more flavor than a standard macro later (note: I like macro lagers so I don’t mean this to be disparaging). I could drink a six pack of this and come back for more so, hey, it serves it’s purpose.

Gold light gold. Some head, ok lace. Nice malty aroma buttery toasty nutty like. Vanilla cookie. Malty foamy mouthfeel, light caramel, toast, light buttery malt. dry foamy. Bit of citrus and generic hop flavor. Decent dortmunder.

On tap in Berghoff in O’Hare. Clear pale. Very sweet lager, bordering on sticky but with a crisp finish. Very lightly hopped. No crap adjunct flavor. Good, if a bit bland lager.

An OK beer. Too light for my taste and too carbonated. Certainly drinkable but there are many beers I would choose first

On tap, poured into a shaker. There’s a cheesy funk to the aroma with wheat and tart fruits. It pours a clear straw with a dense, soft white head. A thin, filmy surface is left behind with a thin ring. The lace runs, so it leaves a clean glass. The taste blends medium sweet with a light bitter. The texture is oily with a medium body and a bubbly champagne carbonation. It finishes buttery, floral, and fruity with a slightly astringent aftertaste.

Bottle. Pours clear corn color. White size white head. Fruity aroma. Flavor is of grain and honey. Overall very mild. Noting offensive, in fact I could see drinking this again because it is nice and smooth. However there is nothing that would make me seek this out. Reminds me of other Stevens Point beers
