COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Scratch the surface of the German beer tradition and you find gems like this: a crisply bitter golden ale from Northern Germany that faded into obscurity a hundred years ago. With its subtle honey notes and small dose of molasses which gives it a lightly nutty character, this is a beer that deserves a much wider audience. We follow the classic recipe, with a mix of three types of malted barley, plus wheat and a dash of oats for a creamy texture, plus tiny amounts of Wisconsin cranberry honey and light molasses, both of which add subtle shading of aroma. Hopping is vigorous, and along noble lines, but amped up a bit with some North American varieties as well, just to keep it fresh-tasting and bold. Itís an ale fermentation, so there is a hint of fruitiness that plays nicely with the honey and molasses notes.

Draft at the Berghoff bar. The pour produces a nice foamy head over a golden lager color, edging slightly toward a pale ale orange. The smell actually put me in mind of German noble hops, with some English in the background. Thatís in the taste as well, although the hop seems to be knocked off its perch by a sweeter malt profile than Iíd expect. After a little more, I decide the hops are the equal of the malt after all, but they donít quite harmonize.

pours a slightly murky gold with a smallish white head. aroma is light sweet floral. Very interesting flavor profile. Definite hop presence. mildly bitter but with spices as well as a little sweet honey. The blend of hops , spices, and honey all come through in the finish and linger in the sinuses. To this point I hadnít been a big Berghoff fan, but this one is quite good!

Decent enough, cleanly made, light style across the board but crisp enough for a hot summer day.

Bottle from Berghoff variety 12 pack. Pours a clear golden yellow color with a foamy white head. Loose, sudsy lacing along the glass. Aroma has biscuit and sweet notes. Flavor is fairly sweet up front with some bitterness in the finish.

Bottle. Pretty clear light orange pour with a small soapy white head. Overripe, borderline rotten, fruit dominates the aroma and taste. Bit of hop edge late. Not a total fail, but nothing Iíd want again.

It seems like Berghoff has recently changed all its labels, made new recipes and moved production from Minhas to Point and the beer is much better for all these changes. It is not out of this world but it is very much better than it was. This beer in particular is a nice golden orange color w/ a long-lasting head of fine white bubbles. It has a bit of a floral, noble hop nose which reminds me somewhat of koelsch--albeit a sort of an Americanized take on it as there is a touch of citrus as well. Although this is a touch on the sweet side there isnít all that much malt taste to it but the sweetness does seem to help support the hops and bring out their fruitier aspects. The bitterness in the finish is solid and resinous w/ a bit of an earth quality to it. An iced-tea like astringent not lingers after the beer is swallowed. This feels to me like a bridge between a Pilsner-type beer and an APA. I am not sure it has the very best qualities of either but it is a pretty damn solid brew.

Tallahassee, Fl - ABC Fine Wine & Spirits - Betton - 12 oz bottle. Medium golden, slight haze, with a snow white head that has a light film of lacing Aroma has a touch of overripe fruit funk, with some light saffron-like spiciness to redeem it, Solid flavor with some light citrus bitterness, a hint of peach/nectarine fruitiness, some biscuit-like bready notes. Clean, even mouthfeel with a nice crispness. Pretty decent,

Slightly sweaty, hoppy IPA aroma. Standard 12 oz longneck, twist off. Good label. Sweetish, a little chemical, odd. Not bad, refreshing. ABC Liquors, Betton.
